One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey is a work of fiction. The experiences he had working in a psychiatric ward are the inspiration behind the novel. I just read another story with the same theme of rebellion against an institution. The story was called “Escape From The Psychiatric Hospital” and followed a patient who was planning his release from the hospital. It was more of a thriller in the style of a long procedural that focused on the details of escape and the tension of the main character’s situation.

And after that he came up with a good story, and so the work is extremely useful for readers of today as well as a valuable, accessible, historical document about an aspect of the history of medicine that it would be good for us to remember. The novel accurately exposes the ways of power, the means of dehumanization, and the psychology of both the oppressor and the oppressed within a total institution.
