I love a good 'enemies to lovers' arc, but the 'forbidden' variant is even better. It's not just that they start off hating each other; it's that they have very good, external reasons to stay apart. Their union would cause a war or break a sacred oath. 'The Wrath and the Dawn' by Renée Ahdieh is a great example (more fantasy). She's there to kill him. He's the king who marries a new bride each night only to execute her at dawn. Their growing love is a betrayal of her mission and his monstrous routine. The forbidden element is lethal, which is about as high-stakes as it gets.

I find the most compelling stories are where the forbidden love forces a fundamental identity crisis. In 'Dragon Bound' by Thea Harrison, Pia is a half-human, half-Wyr of secret lineage, and Dragos is the ancient, all-powerful Wyr dragon king. Her very existence is forbidden, and being with him puts her in the spotlight she's spent her life avoiding. Loving him means accepting her own hidden, powerful nature. So the 'forbidden' element is twofold: his dominance is a threat to her freedom, and her love for him forces her to become someone she feared being. It's a coming-of-age wrapped in a forbidden romance.

I'm a sucker for when the 'forbidden' part is a secret identity. 'Succubus Blues' by Richelle Mead. Georgina is a succubus; to fall in love is to literally drain the life from the man she loves. Her nature makes intimacy a destructive act. The romance with Seth is a slow poison. Every touch, every kiss, she's harming him. It's a forbidden love built on a tragic, unavoidable physical consequence. The agony is in the proximity, in wanting someone you can never truly have without causing them irreparable harm. It's a uniquely painful twist on the trope.

Are there any best forbidden romance novels with supernatural elements?

Recently, I stumbled upon 'The Raven Boys' series by Maggie Stiefvater, and wow, it's really something special in the realm of forbidden romance and supernatural shenanigans! The main character, Blue, finds herself entangled with a group of boys linked to a mysterious ley line that grants powers and visions. There's an undeniable spark between Blue and Gansey, but their love is complicated by the prophecies surrounding her family. The tension is palpable, setting up an exhilarating ride where the stakes are both emotional and mystical. Another gem is 'Beautiful Disaster' by Jamie McGuire. On the surface, it seems like your typical college romance, but there's much more brewing beneath. Abby, a college girl with a mysterious past, meets Travis, a bad-boy fighter. Their chemistry is electric, yet the secrets they both hide threaten to tear them apart. The supernatural aspect isn't as overt here, but the emotional intensity combined with Abby's desperate attempts to keep her past hidden creates a thrilling atmosphere where love feels like a dangerous gamble. It’s raw, passionate, and I couldn’t put it down! If you're looking for something that'll keep you up late reading, I highly recommend 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' by Sarah J. Maas. The blend of faeries, intense romantic tension, and high-stakes drama is simply magical. Feyre's relationship with Tamlin is riddled with elements of danger, given the backdrop of the faerie realm and the enemies lurking in the shadows. The romance is beautifully crafted, and the supernatural elements elevate the emotional stakes, making it that much more enchanting. Each turn of the page left me wanting more, making this a true page-turner. Lastly, ‘Shiver’ by Maggie Stiefvater offers a captivating twist on supernatural romance. Grace has always been fascinated by the wolves in the woods, especially the one with the striking yellow eyes, who is secretly a werewolf himself. Their budding romance is fraught with danger, especially as seasons change and the threat of losing each other looms. The story does an excellent job of weaving the supernatural elements with a tender, yet precarious love story that’s sure to make you feel all the emotions. If you’re into romance that feels both magical and terrifying at once, this one's a great pick!
