Don't forget the cross-time communication tales. Not full bodily travel, but like, Padmé from the past finding the diary of her future self, or Rex receiving fragmented battle reports from a future version of a campaign. The horror of piecing together your own doomed fate from cryptic clues hits harder than just knowing everything upfront. It's a slower burn, a creeping dread that shapes decisions differently.

The whole 'fix-it' timeline seems obvious at first, but there's more texture to it than just preventing Order 66. Lots of writers get specific about which character's consciousness gets sent back. Obi-Wan waking up in his padawan body with all the memories of Mustafar is practically its own subgenre—the angst of knowing what's coming while having to pretend everything's normal with Anakin creates this delicious, sustained tension. It's less about big action and more about the psychological toll, the tiny changes in dialogue that ripple outward.
Another one I've seen a ton lately is Ahsoka going back, sometimes to her early days in the clone wars, sometimes even earlier. Her outsider perspective on the Jedi Order hits different when she has future knowledge; she's not trying to save the Republic so much as she's trying to save her people, the clones specifically. It leads to these very tactical, grounded stories about manipulating military logistics to subtly undermine Palpatine's plans. The focus shifts from lightsaber duels to supply chains and gossip networks, which is weirdly compelling.
Then you've got the less common but fascinating 'Sith' perspective stories. What if Darth Vader's consciousness snaps back into young Anakin's body? He's got all his power and bitterness, but none of the physical limitations. Does he try to take over the galaxy faster and better than Palpatine? Or does his buried love for Padmé create a completely different, darker path to redemption? Those fics are messier and often don't end happily, but the character study is intense.

Honestly, my favorites are the ones where the time travel isn't clean or planned. A Force anomaly, a weird Sith artifact, something that just yanks a character sideways. I read one where post-'Return of the Jedi' Luke and Leia got dumped into the middle of the Clone Wars as themselves, but nobody recognized them. They had to navigate their own parents as strangers while hiding their identities, trying to alter events without revealing the whole time-travel thing. The family dynamics were the core, not the galactic politics. The storyline was less about preventing Palpatine's rise and more about Luke desperately trying to have a real conversation with Anakin before he falls, without being able to say why. It's that emotional payoff, the missed connections and almost-moments, that these stories do so well. The plot mechanics are just a vehicle for the character reunions we never got to see.

I'm gonna be that person and say the popular fix-its are getting a bit predictable. Everyone wants to save the Jedi, save the clones, win the war early. The storyline that actually hooked me recently was a time-loop scenario, not a one-way trip. A minor character—like a random Coruscant guard or a med droid—reliving the same week before Order 66 over and over, trying to find the exact sequence of events to send a warning that someone will actually believe. The frustration and madness of that premise feels more original to me than another 'Anakin knows the future' epic. The scale is small, the victories are tiny, and it somehow makes the tragedy feel bigger.

The cocktail hour had just ended when I picked up a video call in the bridal suite. It was Ethan, three years from now. By then, time‑travel tech had matured enough to let him contact me three years into the past.
After enough specific details, I finally believed it. The man on the screen really was Ethan, three years older.
I rubbed my aching ankle and pouted at him through the screen.
"Ethan, smiling at all these guests is exhausting. But the second I remember I actually married you today, I'm happy all over again."
"We're still happy three years from now, right?"
He was leaning back against a headboard, and he didn't answer. His face was flat and unreadable.
Then I heard it: a woman's voice from his end, low and breathy, asking to be kissed.
I froze for a second, then covered my mouth and laughed.
"Is that future me? In broad daylight? Get a room."
Ethan turned the camera into the bed.
My maid of honor was lying there, naked, sprawled across his chest. Her body was covered in hickeys.
He looked straight at me as I started to break, and his voice didn't shift at all. "As soon as the reception ended, I told you I had a client meeting. I went to her room instead."
"Jo, now you know what's coming. The guests haven't gone home yet. If you want a divorce tonight, you can have one. Up to you."

As the daughter to a prestigious family, she was trained as the heir of her father’s legacy. Usually, this type of training was well-suited for the boys of the family but since she’s the only child and she is a girl, her father allowed her to train. Due to her training, she had no friends and she was casted as an outsider. At a young age, she was expected to train both physically and mentally. She was both good in archery and swordsmanship as well as in her studies as she had an affinity with Japanese history. Years passed and her training was paying off. She was prepared to inherit the company when her parents announced that they will be having another child. Much to her dismay, her baby brother was born. She was stripped of everything she had prepared her whole life for. After an unfortunate car accident, she found herself in a different timeline. Will she be able to return to her own time?
Look, I’ve got a real soft spot for the ones that tackle Anakin's fall. I’ve read this one fic, I think it was 'Echoes of Mustafar', where a post-ROTJ Luke manages to send a series of visions back to his father during the Clone Wars. It’s not a physical journey, more this persistent, haunting warning.
The alteration isn’t that Anakin suddenly becomes a saint. It’s that the vision of his own future, of the suit and the pain, becomes a new kind of fear he can’t shake. Palpatine’s manipulations have to work harder, creating different fractures. The key saga event—Order 66—still happens, but the reason shifts. It becomes a twisted attempt to 'save' the Jedi from the future he saw, rather than just a grab for power to save Padmé. The ripple effects are brutal; a more strategic, desperate Vader emerges.
What I find compelling is how it re-contextualizes the prequels’ inevitability. The tragedy isn’t undone, it’s remixed. You still end up at the same stations of the canon, roughly, but the tracks leading there are laid over different bedrock.
It makes the original trilogy’s redemption feel even more earned, because the darkness was fought against for so much longer, just in the wrong ways.
I really like how 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' fics approach the concept, even if the film itself is divisive. There's this one story, 'A Second Chance at a First Impression', where Ben Solo wakes up in his teenage body right after destroying Luke's temple. Instead of just preventing the fall, the fic forces him to live with the memories of Kylo Ren's atrocities while trying to navigate the mistrust he sowed. The redemption isn't about grand gestures for the galaxy; it's a painfully slow, internal grind where he has to earn back the smallest bits of trust from a horrified Leia or a wary Rey, and the time travel element just makes him more isolated, not less. It's less about fixing the timeline and more about whether someone can be 'redeemed' when they're the only one who remembers the crimes.
Another angle I've seen is with Darth Vader traveling back to the Clone Wars. A lot of those get stuck in power fantasies, but 'The Chosen Path' stands out because Vader's knowledge is almost a curse. He knows Palpatine's plans, but revealing them makes him look like a traitor or a madman to the Jedi Council he despises. His redemption arc becomes a twisted political and personal tightrope walk where saving the Republic might mean destroying the very Order he wanted to save, and he has to confront whether his future self was ever truly a victim of fate or just a man making terrible choices over and over.
