Is the audiobook narrator the same for all the main books? That's sometimes a bigger factor for me than publication order!

From a collector's standpoint, the difference is academic. The first editions line up on the shelf in publication order, which matches the main story progression. Any deviation is in later compiled editions or digital short story releases. For practical reading, your library or bookstore will likely have the novels numbered in publication order, which is the correct sequence. I'd only worry about integrating the shorts if I was doing a thorough re-read.

Honestly, the similarity between publication and story order is a strength. It means you can wander into any bookstore, pick up the series from the shelf in order, and have a coherent, progressing experience. Too many series nowadays have prequels, interquels, and side-stories published out of sequence, forcing readers to look up guides. Winspear's approach is classically straightforward: a linear story, told in linear fashion. The short stories are just that—short, separate anecdotes.

For seven years, Elara has been on the run. Moving every few months, hiding her powerful witch blood, and shielding her younger brother, Orion, has become her miserable existence. The only thing she knows for sure is that her luck is fading. Alone and vulnerable, she falls straight into the clutches of the most dangerous, wicked males in the supernatural world.
Kaelen, Lysander, and Xavier are the ruthless lords of the Penumbra Syndicate, a Fae, a wolf shifter, and a vampire. Chained in their opulent mansion, Elara fights for her life even as she’s overwhelmed by a searing, impossible attraction to her three captors. As the clock ticks down, the men must decide: is Elara the wicked enemy who ruined their lives, or the fated soulmate who can finally save them all?
Riko: Another relocation, another private school. I'm used to it by now. At least this is the last time my dad's job can make me move and change schools. I just need to keep my head down and finish high school. I figured Ravenwood couldn't be any different than every other private school I've been set to. Oh, how wrong I was. No other school I've attended had guys like the Frost triplets. That's right, TRIPLETS! And I don't know why they've sent their icy sights on me, but they've ruined my plans of just going unnoticed and finishing senior year.
Frost Triplets: Ravenwood has been a never-ending bore. Because we are Frosts, people kiss our ass from students to staff. They treat us like royalty. But, of course, we aren't, just from a very old and extremely rich family. None of them know us. Hell, they can't even tell us apart. Which usually suits us fine as we swap with each other for classes we don't like or even when dealing with girls. But it still pisses us off. It's been a long time since there was a new student at Ravenwood and who could blame us for deciding to tease her.
The Princes of Ravenwood Holiday Specials: Bonus holiday content showing Riko and her boys in their happily ever after as a family of eight. The good and the bad that being a polyamorous family of eight entails.

I have a soft spot for the middle books, like 'An Incomplete Revenge' and 'Among the Mad'. They come after she’s established but before the heaviest personal trials of the later novels. They fit into the chronology as a period of relative professional confidence, even as the world outside starts darkening. It’s a fascinating pivot point in the series timeline.
You see her methodology solidifying. Her reputation is growing. Yet, you can feel the dread of the coming 1930s crises brewing in the background. Reading them in order lets you appreciate this ‘calm before the storm’ phase. Jumping ahead to the high-stakes spy stuff would make you miss this crucial developmental stage in her career.
Lol, I tried to jump in with 'Among the Mad' once because the blurb sounded good. Big mistake. The character relationships and her backstory were totally confusing without the earlier books. So yeah, publication order is key. It's not just the cases; it's her whole life unfolding. Start at the very beginning, with 'Maisie Dobbs'. Don't be like me.
Library employee perspective: We just shelve them and recommend them in series number order. That's what 99% of readers want and what causes the least confusion. The few patrons who ask about 'true chronological order' are often surprised to learn there are standalones. They usually just stick to the series.
My two cents: the audio narrator changes the experience, but the order remains king. Hearing Maisie's voice age slightly, hearing the accents of new characters from different regions—it's a performance. And you can't appreciate the performance if you listen to book fifteen before book five. The narrator builds the character across decades. So, same list, but consider the audio format if you have a long commute. It turns the series into an immersive radio drama.
I'll just add a +1 to everyone saying to start with the first book. It's not just the best entry point; it's one of the best books in the entire series. It won awards for a reason. The setup—her backstory as a maid turned scholar turned nurse turned detective—is incredibly compelling. Later books assume you know this origin, so they don't rehash it in detail. If you skip it, you're missing the foundational myth of the character. The mystery in it is also top-notch. So really, you have no reason not to start there. Let the list guide you from that perfect beginning.
