Which Publisher Released The 100 Books Original Covers?

So what DO we want from book 3? Can we get some detail on the plot? Do we finally get to leave Earth with Rei? How does the war with the Archons actually play out? I hope we don’t get bogged down in too much interstellar politics. The strength of the first book was the tight focus on the academy and Rei’s growth as a character. I hope that isn’t lost in an attempt to expand the universe for the third book. I want book 3 ASAP, but I want it to be right. And that takes time. A rushed attempt to expand the universe could be worse than taking a long time to get it right. Just my two cents though.

The idea that ‘1000 books make a library’ is very interesting. Firstly, this quote epitomises a library and what it is made of. For popular novel collections, the books need to be of good quality and diverse in order to cater for a variety of readers. It is a given that classic novels such as ‘Pride and Prejudice’ will feature in many popular collections, but it is also important to remember that modern bestsellers like ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ are also very popular and can be a great gateway to less well-known novels. Classic novels draw people back to them time and again and can evoke feelings of nostalgia in some readers, whilst modern bestsellers can introduce readers to new worlds, authors and stories of today. The best libraries find a balance between a collection of the most popular titles and the rarer, deeply literary work. A collection consisting entirely of bestsellers would likely have a narrow range of subjects and perspectives, while a collection consisting entirely of lesser-known books may fail to attract many readers. For example, a single shelf of Harry Potter novels will usually be placed next to a shelf of equally popular novels, and then next to a shelf of less popular but still terrific novels, including some real gems that few people have ever heard of. So, within the confines of a 1000 book collection, the most popular novels serve as cultural landmarks providing a gateway to other lesser-known but equally wonderful books by a wide variety of authors writing in a variety of different styles. In other words, a library becomes a living archive of the culture of our times, the sum of all human imagination and emotion. However, with the advent of digital media, new platforms for consuming literature have emerged, blurring the lines of what constitutes a library of 1000 popular novels. Online e-book libraries, or even those containing audiobooks, are increasingly finding a foothold, alleviating the constraints of space in physical repositories. Algorithms filtering through the swell of literature online also create new conduits to hugely popular novels and lesser-known literary gems alike. Importantly, though digital media have brought about immense change in how we consume popular novels, the basic principle of a 1000-strong library of fiction remains the same: to spread curiosity, establish connections, and nurture a reader’s love for literature. And at its core, all popular novels act as the catalyst for the countless other novels waiting to be devoured by their readers, a ceaseless stream of literary masterpieces.

The rights to use the alien name “Formics” in a work of fiction such as Ender’s Game are held by Tor Books. As the principal publisher of all the major works in the Ender series, Tor keeps the Orson Scott Card ‘Ender’ canon uniformly consistent. The Tor Books edition of a work is the best single version of a work by Orson Scott Card for any reader.

If you have an original story that you want to self-publish as a PDF book, here’s how I would approach things. First, make sure your story is the best it can be. Get it beta read or send it to critique partners. Once you have a solid story, focus on presentation. Your book’s cover can look amazing even if you don’t have design experience. Many free online tools, including Canva, have easy-to-use templates to create great-looking covers. Don’t under-estimate the power of proper formatting. A self-published PDF can look a real mess if you haven’t got the font, spacing and margins on your story just right. For a cheap alternative to Microsoft Office, LibreOffice or Google Docs are great. For selling PDFs, there are plenty of self-publishing platforms that make it easy, like Gumroad or Sellfy. Just set your price, and upload your book. Consider offering a free sample to any potential customers to give them a taster of your work. Then, promote your book on places like TikTok or Tumblr. Share plenty of visual snippets to engage your followers, and don’t give up. Keep posting and interacting with your followers.

The print version seems more complete than the digital versions, which can be tweaked after publication if necessary. As the translators and editors at Ize Press worked to complete their translations to be printed in ink on paper, they must have taken additional care in order to create the nuanced and consistent voices of the characters. The formal, regal tone of the dialogue of the characters from the palace is upheld without becoming stiff or awkward. Ize Press has done a wonderful job of translating this work to create a high-quality, localization-sensitive print version of the book, and the print license surely played a large part in allowing for the extra rounds of revision that were necessary in order to complete the book within the slower production schedule of print publications as opposed to the weekly updates of web publications.

Listening to the Losers audiobook does an excellent job showcasing the timeline jumps. The narrator Steven Weber is able to change up tone dramatically between decades. The 1958 time frames have an adventurous tone that gradually becomes more and more foreboding as the chapters progress. The 1985 time frames are drastically different and have a much wearier tone. The historical vignettes are delivered in much the same way that a local historian would tell ghost stories or that you would experience grim newsreel footage. It really makes you able to feel the weight of the years on the Losers as they are not just fighting to survive against the clown, they are also fighting against the years of dark, unnatural history of their home town. The time line becomes a very real, almost tangible thing.

E.L. James wrote Fifty Shades of Grey. The involved publishers reflect the currently shifting book trade. At first The Writer’s Coffee Shop, a digital-first publisher, released Fifty Shades. The commercially proven title was then also released by Random House (Vintage) for mass-market paperbacks and by Penguin Random House (Arrow) for hardcover and e-book. That’s the ‘audience-first, distribution-second’ model of business that this breakthrough title helped to make more viable.

So, I assume you got the free book from somewhere on the web and are now trying to transfer it to your eReader via email? That usually works just fine with the free books that authors and publishers offer on their own websites as promotional items. These are usually perfectly set up EPUB files, complete with perfect metadata and a lovely cover. But the files you download from less formal sources (like auto-generated by a web-crawler or created by some enthusiastic fan with no suitable software to do the job) tend to cause problems. And 80% of the problems with an EPUB go away if you start with a decent source file. A well-made EPUB is rather like a well-built house: it all fits together perfectly.

'The Odyssey' is one of my favorites. The original hardcover version I own, published by Penguin Classics, has around 384 pages. It's a bit dense, but the translation by Robert Fagles makes it incredibly readable. The page count can vary depending on the publisher and the size of the text, but most hardcover editions hover between 350 and 400 pages. If you're looking for a specific edition, I'd recommend checking the ISBN or the publisher's website for exact details. The beauty of 'The Odyssey' is that even though it's ancient, it feels timeless, and the hardcover versions often include helpful notes and maps.

For purchased titles I just use the “Cover View” but since the PDF’s don’t have any covers, they just show up as boring old doc icons to me. And I’m done trying to find ways to “organize” them. The process of adding sideloaded titles is it’s own special trip within Amazon’s walled garden, and the existing set of “tools” are really only functional enough to claim existence. And each update seems to bring a fresh round of workarounds falling apart. I spent an entire afternoon following an excruciatingly detailed how-to using a variety of command line tools. Once it worked. Never again.
