When I first read ‘Baby Rattlesnake’ I had no idea that it was based off a Native American folktale. In fact, this book is part of a collaborative work to preserve the indigenous wisdom of the Native American tribe The Chumash, specifically a story from the Chumash of South-Central California about a rattlesnake named Yahtl. As I continued to read, I found that this book did a great job of taking the old story of Yahtl and the rattle and applying it to a modern day scenario. The way in which the consequences of the snake’s actions were not “sweetened” for younger readers was also admirable, and really stayed true to the original story. Aesop’s fables tell you what the moral of a story is before they’re done. “Baby Rattlesnake” doesn’t do that, which is good for kids because they’re able to figure out the hubris, the blind spot of the story and how nature balances things out for this sort of behavior. If you want more Native American stories with the same kind of humor and lessons this one imparts, look for ‘How Chipmunk Got His Stripes’ by Joseph Bruchac.

Playing devil’s advocate here for a moment. For older titles or for fans in regions with limited access to a particular title, fans may seek out pirated copies of a title in order to participate in and enjoy a particular fandom. This is a complex issue of access. Ideally, publishers would negotiate better global licenses and set fair prices for their work.

Consider utilizing children's and young adult literature as a means to introduce history to others in an accessible and thorough manner. The ‘The Birchbark House’ series by Louise Erdrich is an exquisite work of historical fiction that follows the lives of an Ojibwe family in the 1840s on the shores of Lake Superior in what is now Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Although not set in the state of Michigan proper, the culture and setting are identical to that of the Upper Peninsula. The work was meticulously researched by the author in order to clearly portray the daily lives of the main characters and the historical season of contact that the native population experienced with Europeans. It is an excellent vehicle to introduce others to this era and culture, and, via the development of real and relatable characters and their struggles, can teach a great deal about how people lived, loved and survived in order to convey the same information in a novel as would be learned from reading a dozen history books, inspiring empathy and a stronger connection to the people who came before us.

I have checked a few of my normal haunts for this and it seems Yonder have it locked down tight. The best way to read this as a legal download would be to sign up for their in-app model and purchase a daily pass to read it. All other claims to download the full novel as a cheaper option are scams. The story is very hot right now, with two possessive twin anti-heroes, so I’d recommend signing up for the app for a bargainous binge read.

First, notice the quality of the writing in this prose. Iles has written a series of sentences here that are very beautiful or very horrible. Notice how he uses words to paint vivid pictures of the Mississippi river and the dark history of the South. The terrible formatting of the pdf (particularly on a screen full of ads) is going to throw you off from noticing the beauty of these well-wrought sentences. You need to read them in a clean and uncluttered space. And that can mean a number of things: a well-formatted library ebook on an e-reader with e-ink screen; a physical book; or even an audiobook. I don’t want your technical issues to detract from the literary issues with this novel. This is not a slapdash potboiler. It has been carefully written with style as part of the substance of the novel. So, find a good copy.

But unlike the very faithful first season of television, there are large and soon increasing deviations from the original text as the season goes on. We're doing that book for my book club next month and I'm freaking out because 7 copies is a lot. 2 of us are just buying it, 3 people are on waitlists at different libraries, 1 is using an Audible credit to listen to it and sharing her listening time with everyone, and 1 is kind of waiting to see when her sister finishes reading the physical copy and can mail it to her. So if you’re in a reading group, plan ahead and figure out how to get the book for your members well in advance of your meeting. Coordinate with each other. Maybe one of you can get the audiobook and the rest of you can listen at your leisure. Sometimes local bookstores will even offer a discount on bulk purchases of a new release if you ask nicely.
