I have a controversial take: not every book by an Indian author marketed to young readers is well-written. Some feel rushed to capitalize on a trend, with flat characters and clunky prose. It's okay to be critical and selective.
Just because a book fills a representation gap doesn't mean we have to praise it unconditionally. Young readers deserve compelling stories with craft and heart, not just checkboxes. It's better to recommend a smaller number of truly excellent books that will genuinely engage them than a long list of mediocre ones that might turn them off reading altogether. Quality should be the first filter, then representation.

The role of family dynamics in these stories is often so central and complex. It's not just the nuclear family; it's extended networks of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A book like 'The Grand Plan to Fix Everything' by Uma Krishnaswami juggles a move to India, a Bollywood obsession, and a sprawling family with warmth and chaos.
This reflects a reality for many young readers and introduces a different social structure to others. The conflicts and support systems within these large families drive the plots in ways that feel fresh compared to the more isolated-child-hero narrative common in other genres. It's a rich source of both comedy and drama.

Does anyone else get slightly frustrated when fantastic regional language books don't get translated into English for years, if ever? There's a whole universe of stories in Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, etc., that most of the world, and even many Indians, never get to access. While the English-language market is growing, it feels like we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. I wish there was more funding and effort for quality translations aimed at young readers. The next timeless classic could be sitting untranslated on a shelf somewhere.

The discussion about 'own voices' is crucial. While any author can write a compelling story, there's an authenticity in the details, the emotional nuances, and the insider perspective that comes from lived experience. It avoids the pitfalls of cultural tourism or unintentional stereotyping.
Seeking out authors who share the cultural background of their protagonists ensures the stories come from a place of deep knowledge and respect, not just research. This doesn't mean other authors can't write cross-culturally well, but for a 'must-read' list aiming to provide authentic windows and mirrors, prioritizing own-voices narratives is a good guiding principle. It supports the creators from those communities, too.

What about graphic novels? Sarnath Banerjee's 'The Harappa Files' is brilliant, but it's satirical and political. Maybe for an older, artistically inclined teen. It's not a traditional narrative, more a series of illustrated commentaries on modern India. Could be a great way to discuss visual storytelling and social issues.
