My Kindle recommendations are all messed up now because I read one Hannah book. Now it's just 'if you liked that, you'll LOVE this other heart-wrenching historical fiction!' So my 'order' was dictated by Amazon's algorithm. It suggested 'The Four Winds' next. I clicked. The algorithm knows me too well. Maybe just surrender to the machine's choices.
It's wild that this is even a question for non-series books, but I get it. We want the optimal experience. Honestly, the optimal experience is avoiding burnout. Don't marathon them. Read one, then read a thriller or a romance, then come back. So the order is: Hannah, palette cleanser, Hannah, palette cleanser. That's the secret sauce right there.
Listen to the audiobooks! The narrators are fantastic, especially for 'The Nightingale' and 'The Great Alone'. Maybe choose your order based on which audiobook is available soonest on Libby. Let the hold times decide. The performance adds such a layer that the 'order' becomes irrelevant—each is an immersive audio experience. I 'read' 'The Great Alone' during long drives and felt like I was in Alaska.
Isn't it more fun to discover an author out of order? I read 'The Great Alone' first, then went back and found 'On Mystic Lake', an older one. It was like uncovering a secret part of her career. If I'd read in order, it would have felt like a linear march. This way, it felt like exploration. I'd say start with a later famous one, then randomly explore the backlist. There's no map.

"You will walk out of this marriage as you came into it, with only your clothes. You won't get sent nor will you get a house or a car. Sign them and get lost." I fight back the tears as I signed the papers and when I look at him I almost gasp as I saw the hate he has as he look at me.
"The day you realize you made a mistake it will be too late," I tell him emotionless as I walked to the door just as I was about to step out I feel someone grabbing my arm hard making me whimper, "Why would I want someone as disgusting, ugly as you again? Ashley left the house heartbroken and pregnant after he chased her away.

The women in Brianne Montgomery’s family have a curse that compels them to marry before the age of thirty-one, and she wasn't going to be the first one to break it.
Her life seemed perfecThe only thing she hated about her life was Travis Cross—her brother’s annoying best friend.
Travis made a lifetime promise to take care of Brianne for the rest of his life. He promised to be her safety guy to save her from the family curse.
Soon, their once hateful relationship turned into an unbreakable bond of love and friendship.
However, their dependent and comfortable relationship would always be complicated because of the yearning inside Travis that craved Brianne like a drug. And Brianne struggled to stay immune to his charms. She had already lost so much, and Travis had become the most important thing she couldn’t afford to gamble with.
This romance follows Travis and Brianne's lives from the age of sixteen to adulthood and how they dealt with family, teen peer pressure, marriage and breakups… all of which make up their deep and unbreakable connection: A relationship so beautiful, they’re afraid to risk it for anything… not even for love itself.
I borrowed 'The Great Alone' from my mom. She had a beat-up paperback of 'On Mystic Lake' on her shelf from like 2002. Seeing the two different covers, the different wear on the spines… it told a story of an author my mom had followed for decades. I started with the old one, just to connect with that. Sometimes the order isn't intellectual; it's sentimental.
Honestly, just look at your TBR pile, sigh deeply, and then add all of hers to the bottom. They'll get read when they get read. Life's too short to stress about novel order.
