How Do I Read All Lucy Barton Books In Chronological Order?
Mood for a Lucy Barton marathon but my timeline's mixed up. Where's the best list for Elizabeth Strout's whole series, including companion books?

I read them as they were published, so I had years between books. That waiting period let each installment settle. If you're binge-reading them, the publication order still creates a natural rhythm. The first book is a deep character study. The second is a broader landscape. The third is a re-focus with maturity. The fourth is a sudden, contemporary test of that maturity. That's a fantastic pacing arc for a binge. Trying to reorder them might flatten that deliberate variation in scope and tone.

The Wikipedia page for Elizabeth Strout lists the Lucy Barton books in series order, which is publication order. That's the definitive, crowdsourced answer if you just want a quick, authoritative list. But the discussion here about why that order works is the fun part. The list is simple: 1. My Name Is Lucy Barton (2016), 2. Anything Is Possible (2017), 3. Oh William! (2021), 4. Lucy by the Sea (2022). Commit that to memory and you're set.

Don't forget that 'My Name Is Lucy Barton' was initially a standalone. Its power is self-contained. The subsequent books are wonderful gifts, but they're expansions, not requirements. This is important because it means you can absolutely stop after the first one if it doesn't grab you. But if it does grab you, you have this wonderful, unexpected continuation to look forward to. That sense of surprise and bounty is part of the charm. Starting with a mindset of 'I must read all four in order' might turn it into homework instead of a discovery.

I wonder if the author herself has a preferred order. Has anyone seen an interview where Strout comments on this? I'd be fascinated to know if she considers 'Anything Is Possible' a prequel or a parallel narrative.

My book club tackled these, and we argued about order for a solid hour. The consensus was to read them as published. The first book leaves you with haunting questions about Lucy's childhood and family. 'Anything Is Possible' doesn't directly answer them all, but it immerses you in the soil she grew from, which makes returning to her in 'Oh William!' feel even richer. 'Lucy by the Sea' then feels like a natural, contemporary continuation. Switching that up might make 'Anything Is Possible' feel disconnected, since it's not solely about Lucy.

"Sheltered her entire life, Jubilee Thornton yearns to spread her wings and fly after a childhood marked by illness. Her first goal? To attract the attention of the handsome schoolteacher she’s had a crush on for years, Heath DiMarco.
One fateful night, Jubilee throws caution to the wind and kisses Heath—until he pushes her away and tells her they can never be together.
Heartbroken, Jubilee vows to forget Heath and live the life she’s always wanted. In a fit of inspiration, she creates a list of resolutions: to go skinny-dipping, to go on dates, and to finally lose her virginity.
Heath DiMarco moved to the small town of Fair Haven seven years ago to escape the memories of his past. Now a well-respected elementary school teacher, he can’t afford to have a dalliance with the youngest sister of his best friend, no matter how much that single kiss on Halloween night shook his world.
That is until Heath finds Jubilee’s list of risqué resolutions. He can’t bear the thought of her with any man but him.
Yet he knows he can’t have her himself. Instead, Heath decides he’ll vet the men Jubilee wants to date. Jubilee agrees, but only if he teaches her how to flirt—and how to kiss.
He knows he should tell her no, but he can’t resist the temptation she presents.
As desire heats to a roaring flame between them, secrets threaten everything they both hold dear. Unless they untangle themselves from a dangerous web of lies, they will face heartbreak—or be transformed by a passionate love."
The connection is fragile, like a thread of gossamer, which is what makes it so powerful. You don't get explosive plot links. You get Lucy, years later, suddenly understanding a glance her mother gave her in that hospital room. The books are about the persistence of memory and how our early selves never really leave us. Chronologically, 'My Name Is Lucy Barton' covers a hospital stay in midlife and delves into childhood. 'Oh William!' is present-day, with flashbacks. 'Lucy by the Sea' is the immediate sequel set in 2020. They are linked by recurring motifs—hunger, cold, shame, the color of the sky in Maine. Reading them feels like sitting with a friend who keeps remembering new layers of the same story over the years.
The later books reference events from earlier ones in a very offhand way. It's not confusing if you haven't read them, but it's a lovely, quiet reward if you have. Those little nods made me feel like a part of the community, recognizing names and past scandals. That feeling is best earned in order.
The New York Times has a reader's guide for 'Oh William!' that includes a section on 'Which Elizabeth Strout book should I read first?' It gently suggests starting with 'My Name Is Lucy Barton' to understand Lucy's origins. It's a more editorialized source, but coming from a major publication, it feels authoritative.
Major newspaper book sections or literary review sites often have these 'where to start' guides for authors with interconnected works. They're great because they consider the reader's experience, not just the cold facts. A simple search for 'Elizabeth Strout reading order' will pull up a few of these articles from places like The Guardian or LitHub, all confirming the same sequence.
The audiobook versions on Audible are numbered 1-4 in publication order. That’s a strong commercial indicator. So it’s settled: 1. 'My Name Is Lucy Barton', 2. 'Anything Is Possible', 3. 'Oh William!', 4. 'Lucy by the Sea'.
Narrated by the same person, which creates continuity. Listening to them in that order over a few weeks was like sitting with a friend telling me her life story, then hearing stories about her town, then catching up with her years later.
It’s a unique and powerful experience. I’d recommend the audio format highly—the narrator’s subtle performance adds layers to the simple prose.
Just follow the numbers.
