Can I Read Manga On Google Play Books?

One thing that I find difficult to find is how to manage your downloads. After you download a book you can find it in ‘Library’ at the top of the screen you will find where it says ‘Sort/Filter’ and it will be a dropdown. Sometimes it just says ‘All books’ but if you click on it you can choose ‘Downloaded’. This brings up a list of all the books that you have downloaded and you can remove them one by one by swiping left on each book and clicking ‘Remove download’. The book will be removed from your device but will still be in your cloud library.

To me, translation quality is a huge differentiator that gets lost in the comparison of the various apps. While official translations from VIZ, Kodansha, etc. are done professionally in localized dialogue, fan translations on aggregator sites can range from excellent to terrible. Some are even translated via machine to be near incomprehensible gibberers. If you really want to read and appreciate the story and dialogue in a manga, it is worth paying for the official apps to get the best translation and typesetting (which is almost always cleaner and more consistent). It’s also very important to consider the quality of translation when deciding between apps. I’ve stopped reading a series on an aggregator site of manga translations because of poor translation. However, reading the same series through an official app was wonderful, because the translation was professional and even the dialogue was localized to read better. Typesetting was also better distributed and more consistent. When you’re offline for a long time and can’t look up a fanmade summary within seconds to figure out what happened, you want to make sure you have a good translation to begin with. Sometimes paying a little more for an app is worth it because you’re paying for quality content, as the author intended it to be read.

Remember the storage capacity of your Kindle. A base Kindle has 8GB of storage. When you transfer a large Google Play library of books with images, be prepared for it to fill up very quickly. You need to be realistic about how many books you can transfer to your Kindle. Perhaps you will have to choose between purchasing and downloading other books, or purchase a Kindle with more storage. Side-loaded books also do not get the benefit of Amazon’s Whispersync service for notes and highlights between devices, unless you use the ‘Send to Kindle’ service. The annotations you put in a side-loaded book are stuck on that one device.

One thing to note is that the 10 device limit is for devices authorized to download books on your account. Most people will never come near this limit, but power users with a lot of phones, tablets and laptops may run into this occasionally. If you do, you can deauthorize devices from the Play Books settings page on the web. Note that this does not affect reading on the web, which is unlimited. Nope. You're talking about competing services, each with their own form of Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect the same content that you buy. As an example, you can't watch a Netflix Original on Disney+ for the very same reasons. The book you bought from Google Books is locked to Google's services. Your Kindle is not Google services. Any work-around would involve breaking the DRM for the book which would violate the terms of service which you signed up to (potentially illegal in some jurisdictions too).

Perhaps the new Kindle Scribe with its 10.2 inch high resolution display would alleviate some of the problems with reading browser-based manga in order to provide a slightly less terrible experience. While perhaps the larger screen would alleviate some of the zooming required, loading individual pages, and subsequent scrolling between would likely remain. I’d be very interested to hear the experiences of anyone who has tried to use the Kindle Scribe for such purposes. As it’s a very expensive item, I wouldn’t want to persuade anyone to purchase it for this purpose, but perhaps someone already has? For the standard $129 Paperwhite or basic e-ink Kindle, the answer is a clear no. The hardware simply is not capable of running a decent browser, let alone one that’s been cobbled together as an afterthought, as a main feature. It has too minimal a processor, too little RAM, and so on.

Managing expectations here is key. While it’s true that there is plenty of Manga available to read for free online (sample chapters, for example), there is no single source of completely legal, full, and free Manga chapters that are nicely formatted to read on a Kindle. I understand that Amazon, many publishers, and creators, alike, make money. Thus, your ‘free’ sources would typically include samples, borrowed for you by your local library (which they pay for), or the many, many ‘shadow libraries’ available online. So try to get as many sources ready for you as possible (including your library apps), regularly check out the Kindle store's free stuff, and consider a Kindle Unlimited trial for your next long reading session. For that obscure 1990s series that's long since been taken out of print, learn how to use Calibre. Diversifying your routes to get more manga for free reduces frustration and helps you to discover a lot of other series – reading through the various catalogs for each of your chosen methods of getting free manga to read is half the fun for me. Finding that one rare gem in the library's digital stockroom is just the best.

This also leads to an economic consideration. Converting a Google Doc to a manuscript file with their tool locks you into their ecosystem for that file. An EPUB on the other hand is a digital asset that you can take with you wherever you go. Even if converting a Google Doc to an EPUB today is easier than ever before, creating your own EPUB file will grant you far more control over the long term than using someone else’s conversion tool. For the author this is a small piece of digital sovereignty. The choice of file format is not just a matter of technical compatibility. It’s also a matter of who gets to be in control of the final version of your work.

For best experience, manga should be read on a tablet. I read Shonen Jump on my Microsoft Surface Go (which runs full Windows) using the Android subsystem to run the app. A standard Kindle e-reader does not have an app store, even if you jailbreak it. Manga is highly interactive and highly visual, so it is not well suited to reading on an e-reader's screen. Even if you could find a way to get the app on your e-reader, the screen refresh rate would not support comfortable reading. If you already have a tablet, that's all you need to read manga. If you're deciding between a tablet and an e-reader for reading manga, choose the tablet.
