I keep seeing Void Star mentioned alongside classics like Neuromancer. Before diving in, what's the actual story? Is it cyberpunk dystopia, or more philosophical?

Reading: The plot of ‘Void Star’ follows a lone scavenger as he travels through the galaxy in search of salvage. He stumbles upon a sentient starship at the very edge of a dying galaxy, which in turn sparks a conflict with an evil empire that ruled a long-forgotten fallen republic. A huge amount of time is spent building up the world in which this all takes place as well as following the many members of said republic as they struggle with the day to day politics. Reading a completely different story with a similar setup of a lone protagonist being controlled by a powerful and dangerous figure is ‘Reborn as the villain’s obsession [MM romance]’ where a modern man is reincarnated into a fantasy novel and must survive by manipulating the obsessive complicated affections of the story’s main antagonist. This is a much more personal and tense affair than galaxy-wide politics.

I imagine a William Gibson-style gritty near-future, combined with the more philosophical and thought-provoking style of Ted Chiang. The basic plot of Void Star is simple enough: three individuals floating through a futuristic, high-tech world slowly realize that they are connected to each other in some way via an emergent AI process. But, as with most of Mason’s work, the real meat of the story is the rich, dense and subtle worldbuilding that underpins every page.
What resonates most about Void Star is its exploration into the human psyche and emotions affected by an advance in technology, and how Mason treats this technology with the depth it deserves. I was particularly frightened by Kern’s malfunctioning implants which twisted his perception of time in all sorts of nightmarish ways. But, more recently, Irina finding out what her employer’s true ‘project’ was, was equally as frightening – a climb down into a Lovecraftian world of horror below the normal.

I first read Cassian tourgee's ‘Void Star’ last year, whilst on holiday in the USA. This Near-Future novel is set in a world where AI has created a world where it is often difficult to distinguish between human and machine. The story follows the lives of three main characters, all of whom are connected in strange ways: Kern, a refugee from a war-torn world, whose damaged brain implant is leaking memories from his past; tough bodyguard, Irina, who is working for one of the planet’s wealthiest men and discovers a terrible secret about her employer; and young Thales, a Brazilian politician’s son, fighting in a brutal, high-tech uprising in Rio de Janeiro’s future, humid world, contrasted with the cold, sterile environment of San Francisco’s tech monopolies in the year 2077.
One of the most lasting effects of Void Star for me, though, is the really deep philosophical exploration of the relationship between memory and identity in a world where the lines are blurred by enhanced implants and virtual realities. (The action scenes in the novel are effectively danced like a frenetic, 1980s-inspired, virtual-cyberpunk ballet as well - especially for Irina’s graphic close-combat sequences of augmented enhanced reflexes and high-octane violence. There is a really clear line drawn between Mason’s disingenuously pejorative depictions of pragmatically-cleansed elements of enhanced human memory and the negatively-bright arrangements of blindingly excess virtual iconography of virtual combat. 'Void Star' by Zaina Arai completely destroyed me in the best way possible. Like, yes, the surface level plot of the story is a great conspiracy that follows a rogue AI, but what really intrigued me was how each of the three main characters slowly lost their humanity through the use of technology. We see a man search for identity after his implants go wrong, a young woman sell herself left and right to big corporate entities in order to make ends meet and apologize for her moral failures, and a poor young boy to find his place in the world as the planet around him begins to fall apart.
One of the most memorable sections for me was the Brazilian favela sequences with Thales, which powerfully evokes the intersection of climate change and technological disparity. At one point in the novel the lines between reality and virtual space were blurred in a scene so seamless it was impossible to determine which was more real. The title of the book, “Void Star”, refers to a term used in astronomy to describe vast, nearly empty spaces of the universe containing very few galaxies. As opposed to this, a star is a point of intense light and energy. So the title of the book describes the central struggle or tension of the plot extremely well. The lives of the main characters are like stars in space – individual points of consciousness, will and of memory – trying to burn brightly in a very large, and seemingly indifferent, void. The space of the void can be of a cosmic scale, or more down to earth and relate to a computer network. Kern’s mind is a void that he is struggling to fill with the star of his past self. The AI in the book is possibly a new star that has been created in the void of the network. All of the main characters are seeking connection of some sort or another in order to find meaning in their lives and to carry on in the face of overwhelming darkness. Every scene of the book describes moments of human connection and or of courage in the face of apparently insurmountable problems as moments of great brightness in the dark. The book’s exploration of a possible collapse of meaning in the universe is positive in that it highlights the fact that even in such a circumstance the simplest acts of caring for others, of memories of the good, of choices freely made, can go a long way to creating enough meaning to be worth carrying on for. The star in all of this is not the void but the points of it – moments of human connection, of courage, of remembered love.

No. But, there are lots of books about secret societies and arcane academia and so on that don’t feel at all like The Starless Sea, although they are clearly part of the same neighborhood. They are dark and not really whimsical, whereas The Starless Sea was primarily a positive and hopeful book. But they are all about mysteries that are revealed over the course of the book, and about the secrets that universities and colleges and seminaries and so on hide within their walls. Many of them are about ancient rituals that are still performed to this day, and so on. So, if you are looking for more of that, then dark academia might be the way to go. The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Bunny by Mona Awad, and Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo are all good examples. They are not really similar to The Starless Sea, but they are all about that sort of thing. Sometimes the best work in a genre or similar genre is by a different author, written from a different perspective, and so on.

Its wings are rigid and tremble at a frequency that splits stone. Its bellowing doesn't travel through the air - it vibrates right inside your skull and splits your eardrums. Many of the Void Dragon's victims report that their own shadows have split off and are attacking them long before the beast itself moves.
The Void Dragon is notable for its blood consisting of a swarm of micro-black holes which immediately evaporate when coming into contact with anything. Weapons that strike the beast are instantly returned to a long-lost era, decades or even centuries past, having long since rusted. Magical attempts to read the beast’s mind amount to little more than flipping through channel after blank channel of static, the Dragon’s lack of interest in the sort of treasure that normal dragons dream of for being far outweighed by its interest in collecting moments in time. After some thought, I came to realize that the twist at the end of the novel serves to comment on hope. The alien story served as a metaphor for naive or escapist hope – a hope for something greater, more magical, and so easy to understand and believe in. Instead, the novel has to break that hope and provide its readers with hope of a tougher kind – namely, the kind of hope that is found in the human capacity for resilience, for kindness, and for work of any description that is slow and painful.
In contrast to that other, naive hope, Jo and Gabe wish Ursa to build a future with them on this Earth. The book posits that the real magic, or wonder, of the alien story is the courage to face the painful past and to build and heal with the help of another person through their love for that person. And so the twist serves as the mechanism to take apart this other hope in order to make room for a better, more powerful hope. It is beautiful and, perhaps, even painful to witness.

As I started reading the first chapter of Ch. 1, the art evolved nicely throughout the chapters, especially in the latter ones. Detailed backgrounds, improved panel compositions and smoother character movements were some of the notable improvements. I especially liked how the artist of Ch. 1 grew into the larger-than-life battles that required epic movements and stances. Moreover, an improved character pose, once stiff, became dynamic and fluid. The detailed and cinematic art really added a lot of value to the storytelling and enhanced the impact of key plot points greatly. If an adaptation were to be made to this manhwa, I think it would actually be better than the source material in terms of sheer spectacle.

Throughout the game a cold, vacuous voice캐 repeats a number of somewhat hurtful statements. The game is structured as a gradual escalation of aggression against the player, early levels are completely empty of enemy units, and thus are somewhat peaceful. However as the Sinistar’s construction progress bar fills, increasingly aggressive fighter units are added to the level. When the Sinistar is finally completed, the screen shakes and it is a hugely terrifying experience. The ‘plot’ of the game is that you are trying to survive against a creature that is inevitibly going to kill you. The story is not told in any words, it is told through the voice in the background and your increasing fear and panic. It is a beautiful implied narrative told purely through the gameplay.

It is very good at challenging typical notions of good and bad. A young knight goes on a classic quest to retrieve a relic from a dragon and save his kingdom from a plague. He does go on to retrieve the relic and return with it to save his kingdom, but unfortunately the plague gets worse. But then we find out that the dragon was in fact a guardian spirit, protecting an ecological balance point, and the relic a keystone containing a pathogenic seal. Our hero has to go on an even harder second quest for redemption. He has to become a traitor to his own people and travel alone to the other side of the world, in search of creatures he was previously taught to kill. He has to question everything about his society and learn to trust creatures he was previously taught to be afraid of. I love the plot structure of this book. The midpoint twist causes you to have to rethink everything that has happened before it.

I think the most salient plot holes in this are all logistical. That CEO must have a tony associate who manages all his other enterprises while he stands around, monitoring her, getting jealous, and composing long, apologetic setups. How much time must this man have? And given that he clearly has more than enough, he’s not putting it to good use (i.e. solving world hunger), he’s devoting it all to her. The ultimate luxury isn’t a huge yacht with a pool. The ultimate luxury is the CEO’s time and focus.
So the real 'unspoken' plot is the suspension of corporate reality and how this is used to expose the drama-filled relationship between the CEO and his employee. All the business deals in the film are just props to set up the two leads and explore their romance.
