I added some links to popular sites where you can read ‘Mother and No Other’ (some of them even have an English version, but it’s not that common, though). While you wait for it to show up on the site, you can read another piece with complex maternal relationships in it – a web novel ‘The Mother I Left Behind’. It’s a contemporary drama that takes place in a span of several years. An adult daughter returns to her mother’s place after decades of separation. The writer captures beautifully the weight of unsaid things and the slow process of reconciliation.

I’m in the middle of a pretty long readthrough of several manga and one that’s kind of hitting home for me right now is “Mother and No Other” (translations differ as to whether the full title is written with capitals or not). I know that “Mother and No Other” isn’t as high of a ‘mainstream’ read as, say, “One Piece” but it is available through a few different avenues. For one, the official apps for Viz and Kodansha’s K Manga sometimes add older manga or even completely indie works to their library, so it’s definitely worth checking back on a regular basis.

Many manga are sold as e-books and can be bought through services like Amazon Kindle Store or Google Play Books. Paper copies of titles that are not currently in print are also sometimes bundled with their digital counterparts. Fans that translate a series can also post links to their work on their Twitter or Tumblr accounts. So even if you can’t read it right now, if you like a manga, buying a copy when it is released supports the work of the mangaka who wrote it.

‘Mother and No Other’ (Mû za musumes) is another series that I’m having trouble tracking down on-line. Of course, officially it would be found on sites such as MangaPlus by Shueisha or on ComiXology. But there are many lesser titles picked up by official online release sites, and supporting the creators and the publisher is always a good thing. But until then, there are always fan created scanlations floating about. Generally the quality is hit and miss and they are often released illegaly, but some of the fan translations are of excellent quality. I’ve managed to find some good ones on places such as MyAnimeList (forum for manga lovers) or r/manga (subreddit for manga). However, there are many dead links, and often not all the chapters are available. Many newer manga are released as ‘raws’ on Japanese sites such as BookWalker or eBookJapan. As for translated versions, sometimes a title will be picked up by a small publisher, and you can follow their social media accounts to find out when they have been. But I’d found it on a few manga-focused Discord servers where people request and share manga, and the community is really helpful and able to track down obscure titles.

If digital libraries don’t turn up any results, I’d recommend checking out the digital stores of countries you live in or have lived in, like BookWalker or eBookJapan for Japanese-language versions in raw scans (or flip book versions if you read Japanese). Then there are the smaller English publishers, whose social media announcements of surprise picks can be a good lead to track down titles like this. As a last-ditch request, politely ask for the manga on any manga-focused Discord channels (many are very resourceful and more than happy to help find obscure titles).

I'm also having a hard time finding “Mother and No Other” online. Since it seems to be one of those not-so-well-known titles, I search on Baka-Updates (among others) for the title and for the scanlation group that released it, to see if they’ve posted it on their website. Some lesser-known titles are hosted on the website of the individual team that scanned it. You can also search Webtoon and/or Tapas for “manga-style”, since while they are best known for their webcomics, there are many manga-style works available on these websites. It may take a while, but if you contact a publisher via email or social media, they may even be convinced to pick up the license for you. Let’s hope!

A tablet user can read almost anything on any app. For people reading a visually stunning series with lots of beautiful art, high-resolution images of said art are paramount. Some legally-available versions of a series have image-compressed versions in order to reduce bandwidth. When looking for a legal version of a series to read, see if the publisher offers a sample. Check the art for crispness. A fan translation may vary even more in quality, depending on whether or not the group that translated it has scanned from pristine print volumes or from lower-quality magazines. Hmm... Is this the series with the absolutely gorgeous watercolor-style flashbacks? I get all these titles confused. The lighting in this artist's work is stunning and I so wish for an artbook. Unfortunately I have no idea how to start reading this though. I did see some panels from this on Pinterest, and they led me to a Tumblr where someone had reblogged a few translated pages. And then I hit a wall. Social media is such a strange way to get into manga.

I’m warning you, this is going to be a rant about regional licensing for digital content. Sorry in advance. I wish publishers would allow us to pay them directly for digital copies of their work and we could read them where ever we are in the world. Instead, we have these various apps that offer different amounts of content, most of which are locked behind geo-blocks. As a result, people are pushed towards piracy, not because the work would be too expensive for them, but because it would be too much of a hassle to try and find a legal copy. I managed to find the specific manga you mentioned, but it is only available on certain apps. If you set your VPN to connect to US or Canada servers, you can sometimes unlock the work on the major apps. The system is broken. I think what we need is for publishers to create a global store for their digital manga, similar to how Steam functions for video games. They can set their own prices, and we can buy whatever we like from them, anywhere in the world.

Follow the money: the really broken manga licensing system is what’s really bad here. For “Mother and No Other,” follow the primary Japanese publisher for this work: Kodansha. The title is published as part of their “K Manga” line, which is currently only available to readers in the US via an often-buggy app. (Shueisha-published manga appear on Manga Plus or in the Shonen Jump app; Square Enix titles are on Manga UP!, for example.) It’s difficult to follow a link to read your manga when you have to create a flowchart in order to figure out where to read it. I have many publisher Twitter accounts followed, and use Anilist to track my reading. Often, I can find user-submitted links to legal sources for the manga I’m reading on that site. They’re not always 100% accurate or up-to-date, but many are very good, and I’ve found many legal places to read manga that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

My two cents: Right now the digital manga market is in a kind of flux. There are subscription services, like Crunchyroll, but with limited catalogs and titles constantly being added and removed. Individual volume purchase options are locked to specific digital ecosystems. And then there are the free-with-ads models. It’s a bit of a mess. My advice would be to search out all of the models for a specific title: check the subscription services (Crunchyroll, Azuki), the freemium apps (Manga Plus, Comikey), and the ebook stores (Kindle, Kobo). If it’s not available digitally in your region, sometimes using a VPN to check out the ebook stores of other countries works, but that’s a whole other can of worms. In the end, though, there are just too many great manga being published for any one of them to be allowed to be difficult to read. So sometimes I just end up reading something else that is easily available.

I really appreciate physical media right now. Searching for the physical copy might end up being easier. You can search for physical copies of your desired series on websites like Amazon, RightStufAnime, or even eBay. Some series might be out of print which means they can be pretty expensive but you know you’re definitely getting the series you want. You buy it, it arrives in the mail and you can start reading it. No geo-blocks, no issues with apps, and you don’t have to worry about missing chapters. The book is yours to keep. Recently I’ve started going back to physical copies of my favorite series because the digital landscape is so unstable. A series’ license can expire, an app can shut down, or you can end up with inaccessible files. However, a book on a shelf is impossible to lose.

For me, this is why I have largely switched to reading webtoons and webcomics. The model is simply more efficient. Webtoons and Webcomics are available for free to read, with a consistent update schedule for each. On top of that, you can ‘tip’ the creators in coins if you so wish. Korean/English originals have a far more efficient digital distribution model than their Japanese manga counterparts. This is because the various companies involved in digital manga distribution seem to operate in silos, with no cooperation between them at all. It makes for a frustrating reading experience, even for someone as much of a fan of Japanese manga as myself. For ‘Mother and No Other’ however, that hassle is currently being experienced by you, and that’s not nice. I wish I had a better answer for you.

I went on a wild rollercoaster ride trying to find this manga, and I finally found it on an app. I read a few chapters, and the next thing I knew, the license had expired and it was gone. Manga like this are available on MangaDex, which has fan translations, and their quality can vary wildly from amazing to not readable at all. Most manga are actually translated by dedicated groups who put their heart and soul into each series. You can find official routes on apps such as Azuki and INKR, which are smaller but pick up interesting licenses every now and then. Just be wary of aggregator sites that are basically just ad farms. They can be really hard to navigate, and many of them contain malware. I wish that licensing manga worked faster and was more transparent. Like, right now it’s so that we can give the creators of the manga their due, but for some reason the system is set up in a way that makes it really hard for us to do that.

Inter-library loan may be able to get the books for you if the library has them within the country. It’s a slow process but it’s free and it’s legal. Many people don’t know that even books that are not in print can be found within large city libraries and university libraries within the country. As the books are in print in the language you need, this could be an old solution to your digital problem. It will take a few weeks, but it’s guaranteed to get you the series you want to read and it’s supporting the libraries too. Thought I’d mention it as it’s an option for those that are happy to wait a few weeks.
