I love the quirky characters in ‘How to Get My Husband on My Side’ – none of them are what you expect. Ruby is not a weak, pitiful woman in a terrible marriage. She’s actually really clever and manages to survive her husband’s political ambitions for their marriage. And then there’s Izek, who could be a typical brooding love interest, but no. We see the affects of his past traumas on his behavior and can’t help but want to help him, even when he’s being a right pain. Their sharp repartee is gentle and endearing as it gives way to warmth and somewhere along the line, a palpable chemistry between them.

The novel does a great job of balancing the inner struggles of its protagonists and the external conflicts they face. The minor characters at the court are also fully developed and have their own distinct personalities. Most novels wouldn’t even think to include secondary characters in the way that this one does, and they work beautifully.

A far from perfect heroine in Ruby, often manipulative and definitely flaky at times, but also realistic and flawed enough to make her relatable at times. Her ‘relationship’ with Izek wasn’t some instant love affair either. Ruby and Izek have a pretty up and down relationship and it is only through Ruby’s trust of Izek being earned, that their relationship progresses to where it does.

The secondary cast is so rich, too. Ruby’s kind and wisecracking maid is the comic relief the story so desperately needs and she’s written with such warmth and humor. The rival politicians are so menacing and add so much tension and suspense to the story without overpowering Ruby and Izek’s relationship. So if you’re getting tired of typical romances and are looking for something a little different with very complex and unique characters then this is definitely a novel you should pick up!

Ruby is a clever character in unexpected ways outside of her central trauma. She is not strategically clever in the way of a villainess, rather she is situationally clever. She has the ability to be an astute observer of micro-expressions and social cues because she has had to rely on her ability to read people in order to survive. This is highly evident in the political court of late 16th century Russia and Ruby is able to notice things that others have missed because she is looking for danger.

This is also true of Izek’s ‘coldness’. Politically and strategically, he is an incredibly smart man who has ruled a violent border region for years with wits as much as will. His misperception of Ruby in the beginning is simply an application of the decades of experience he has of reading for spies and other political machinations. The reason he misreads her is that he is looking for something that she is not – and she, in turn, is not behaving as he expects empty-headedness to behave. It takes him a long time to realize that she is pretending to be empty-headed in order to hide the terror of her abuse as a child. But once he does realize this, their clash of intelligences (her terrifically developed emotional intelligence due to her horrific childhood and his strategic intelligence due to the way he rules) starts to work in a really good way because both of their kinds of ‘smarts’ are eventually complemented by the other rather than conflicting.

Instead of listing all the usual platforms, I thought of another way to consume this novel - as an audiobook! As the author said, this is a highly emotional story, so I really think it would be great to have a voiced version of it. I'm pretty sure there isn't an official audiobook version of this novel yet, but it would be something I'd look for on Audible or even on Spotify Audiobooks if there were more Korean webnovels being adapted for Western audiences. I'm pretty sure there are some fan-made audio dramas of this novel floating around in Korean fan communities, but most of those are in Korean and it's hard to find them even when you can read the language.

Until then, you can always try listening to text-to-speech on a reading app (some of the newer AI voices even do a pretty good job of correctly applying emphasis to certain words). That way, you can listen to chapters while doing chores, for example, and still manage to get engrossed in the angst. The slow-burn tension in this novel actually translates really well to an audio format - there's just something about the awkward silences between characters that you can really feel when you close your eyes and just listen. Hopefully there will be an official version at some point, and I'll be among the first in line to give it a listen. The dinner table scenes, in particular, must be tortured to perfection.

In terms of content, if you can look past the plot of this novel and just read it as a character study of a young woman with complex PTSD, it is honestly some of the most visceral and accurate writing on anxiety and living with PTSD that I’ve ever read. Ruby’s “act” is a brilliant, wrenching, painful dissociative defense mechanism that she uses to get by in a society that is so normalized to abuse that even the magical structures of this fantasy world serve to help trap her in her helplessness. It is really brilliant.

This is also why the coldness of Izek, her love interest, is so powerful. The man is a walking trigger for the main character, because his imposing physique, and stern silent judgment brings back feelings of her abuse. Their relationship is not marked by romantic gestures. Instead, it’s a slow evolution of how Izek can unintentionally be safe for Ruby, and how she can come to believe that safety is real. It’s a healing novel through unbearable tension. And it’s the character work that makes said tension not frustrating, but powerful.
