Where Can I Read Wattpad Completed Stories For Free?

For fans of completed fiction, is Wattpad's search still the best place to find free, full-length reads or are there better apps now?

You can read many of the completed Wattpad stories for free. Many are listed in the completed stories list on the Wattpad home page, but you can also search using the filters on the Wattpad stories page for ‘Complete’ and ‘Free’. There’s a huge library to choose from. I came across ‘Hot Desire (A Collection of Steamy Stories)’ which is a completed collection of short, finished stories. Each story is a quick, short, completed romance and once you start reading, you can instantly read the rest of the stories in the collection without having to wait for updates. The Wattpad app is really great for reading favorites from a collection and marking the page where you left off.

I’m a total addict of Wattpad – so it’s great for me that there are plenty of completed stories on the site that I can read for free without hitting any paywalls. Many of the best completed stories are listed as such under the stories tab (and you can then also filter by ‘completed’). GoodNovel and Webnovel are also good sites to look for free completed stories (and paid ones) – just be wary of any unofficial sites that you may stumble across – many of these have really dodgy ads on. My tip is to follow your favorite authors on social media too – often they’ll use completed stories as ‘reader magnets’ to advertise their work, and you can then read them for free too. My favorite completed story of last year was ‘The Cellar’ by Natasha Preston – I found out about it via a Twitter rec.

As someone who devotes an excess of hours searching for free reads, I've managed to perfect the way to locate completed Wattpad stories. For starters, use the official Wattpad app (available for iOS and Android) and sort completed works through the ‘Discover’ tab by using the Advanced Search filters and choosing your desired genres. For some reason or another, the completed romance stories are piled up in the Romance section. Be warned that although After is a completed, highly binge-reading-worthy series, some of the later parts of the series are now available on paid platforms.

In addition to Wattpad, I tend to search for fanfic written on Archive of Our Own (AO3) that follows the exact same trope as some of my favorite Wattpad stories and filter the results by ‘Complete’ and word count to find novel length stories. I also have a ScribbleHub account which is ad minimal. Many libraries also now offer fiction such as this through apps such as Hoopla.

P.S. Do avoid ‘free Wattpad stories’ clickbait websites – they are most likely to be pirated or contain malware. Instead, visit sites where writers share their work for you to read for free.

Finding a hidden gem on Wattpad can be so exciting! While Wattpad does have a huge library of finished stories, there are many ways to maximize your free reading time. For one, I have many accounts so sometimes a story will be incomplete on one but finished on another (likely due to region restrictions on when it can be published). I follow Wattpad’s Official Reading Lists which get updated monthly and recently there were some great completed finds in ‘Completed Romance Must-Reads’.

But for offline reading, this really cool browser extension (for Google Chrome) called ‘Download PDF’ helps to download completed stories (if the author allows it to be downloaded as a PDF) for your flight/holiday/etc. My favorite finds on Wattpad include ‘The Bad Boy’s Girl’ (over 100M reads) and the really good vampire story ‘Bloodstream’.

When I’m finished with Wattpad, I switch to Dreame or Galatea for the free trial periods of each app to read as much completed work as I can before it switches over to paid stories.

I miss the old Wattpad. It was so much easier to find finished stories on the old site. Now Wattpad is all algorithm-based and I find myself getting recommended to ‘VIP’ stories, ‘Paid’ stories and ‘Trending’ stories. Most of these are not even complete. I have to fight the algorithm to find the older classics. I can do this by sorting my search results to show the ‘Most Voted’ or ‘Most Read’ stories instead of ‘Hot’. The ‘Most Voted’ list at the top of the results is based on stories that have been actively endorsed by readers chapter after chapter. These are the stories that readers love the most, and have therefore been voted to the top of the list. They are often the finished classics that have stood the test of time on the site.

Even if a story was completed years ago, you can scroll through the comments for each chapter. The 'Wattys Longlist' for example is a very long list of Wattpad stories that the platform recognized in some way or another. I've found that many of the stories that have passed this basic curation step have decent grammar and a decent plot structure, which is a step above the typical Wattpad story and a good middle ground between the mayhem of the main library and the paid/original content. To start searching for free finished books on Wattpad, simply head to Wattpad's website or app. On the main categories page, there is a HUGE ‘Completed Stories’ tag. You can then filter by genre (such as romance or fantasy) and start browsing. The vast majority of Wattpad stories are free to read, and most of them are finished. Sometimes you might come across a story that has a ‘paid stories’ banner above it, but that’s just because the author is allowing early access to the story for payment. Eventually the entire story will be added to Wattpad and become free to read. I’m rather addicted to Wattpad as there are so many great, hidden gems written by new and upcoming writers. The algorithm isn’t perfect, but it’s so satisfying when you stumble upon a great story.

The reader must note that there are some terrible first drafts, incomplete works, and even abandoned stories with the ‘completed’ tag. Nevertheless, the fact that they are free to read makes up for that.

There is a strong community aspect to the stories on WMF. Be a reader, not a silent one. On completed stories (regardless of how long ago that was), leave a comment. Authors come back to finished stories from time to time and get a kick from new comments being left on them. Even years after the story was completed it can really make the author’s day to hear that someone has really loved the ending to a story that they finished years before. That comment will also help to get the story to show up in searches for related terms, and help to keep the story in the main archive (as opposed to it becoming a dormant part of a static library) by getting others to engage with it as well. Even a comment like “Just finished this and loved the ending!” helps to contribute to the WMF ecosystem and will ensure that the author continues to leave their work available for free.

To read on Wattpad is to go to a buffet. I pick and choose what I like and take a bite of it first. I can read the first chapter of 10 completed stories in about an hour. Then I decide whether or not I keep reading based on that one chapter. This way of reading on Wattpad is very cost effective, so I don’t feel any guilt. By reading Wattpad stories in this “speed-dating” manner, I am able to read the work of many writers. Until I am sure of a writer’s voice and good grammar, I won’t commit to reading their entire work. The first chapter is the author’s pitch to get you to read on. Because most free content does not have the luxury of a slow burn first chapter, the writer must try to get you hooked from the very beginning of the first chapter. My approach to reading on Wattpad is ruthless, but I have found many great writers by reading in this manner. I might have missed out on some of them if I had finished every story that I started to read.

Using the ‘Reading List’ feature on SFFWorld is so obvious and I feel stupid for not thinking of it earlier. When you read a completed story, you can add it to your reading list instead of immediately starting to read it. So, for example, I have a public reading list for completed To-Reads called ‘Completed To-Read’. Stories are added to this list as I come across them and I get around to reading them. It’s my own little library, which over time becomes a really useful resource for other readers. The lists also help the authors, since getting added to a list increases their visibility. My lists are currently organized by genre and by mood, but there are lots of other ways to do it. Using the ‘Reading List’ feature is how you build a sustainable, long-term relationship with the SFFWorld platform.
