This daily pass system for Webtoons is kind of adorable. Instead of consuming a whole story in one sleepless night and then feeling inadequate the next day, the system makes you appreciate each story chapter by chapter. For ‘Pearl Boy’ you can read the first bunch of chapters all in one go and then get a few more each day. This system builds anticipation. Reading ‘Pearl Boy’ for free on another website would just give me the whole story at once, which would feel vacant and like I stole it. Reading it on Webtoon for free, however, adds a layer of ritual to my reading experience that I appreciate.

Many older readers remember the time of scanlation groups who proudly placed their watermark on the first page of their releases. You used to search for certain groups that were known for their quality. With the growing number of official apps and aggregator sites, which strip their users of all credit for their work, that culture has largely disappeared.

For Borderline, I haven’t seen any notable fan group give it a read. But it’s there, everywhere, anonymously. This removes the translator’s voice from the manga reading experience and the community surrounding a release. Even the official translation reads professionally but is anonymously given to us readers. We’ve become so useable that our loss of connection to the content we read is felt so little. My “where” would be nostalgic for these “fan groups” but for now my practical click is the Webtoon app where Borderline reliably appears.

Often translators announce updates on their Twitter accounts or on Curious Cat and then link to the appropriate chapter on their free hosting (usually a free blog like WordPress or Blogger). This is because big aggregator sites tend to repost chapters without the translator’s permission, so it’s best to go to the translator’s site directly for the latest, greatest version. Turning translator seems to post update announcements fairly regularly on his Twitter account. A search for his name should turn up recent updates to his work. It’s a lot easier than wading through a bunch of middlemen.

Most BL authors, as well as web novel platforms, have email newsletters where they announce Freebie days, sales with special discount codes, etc. They even give away short stories as a special treat to their subscribers. I have a special folder for these newsletters on my email account, and I try to read them once a week. In them, I’ve received complete free novellas, short stories that haven’t been published yet, and even free chapters that are published before the rest of the book.

It may require you to sign up for the newsletter (which some people are really opposed to), but seriously, it’s such a low barrier to entry to get this kind of stuff sent to you on a regular basis. Authors love it because it helps them build their direct audience, and you love it because you get to read free legal fiction on the web without having to seek it out. Just use a burn email or a throwaway to sign up with, is my advice.

I’ve been reading a web novel called ‘Fated to Love You’ by which this manga could be based. It’s a story about a contract marriage that was originally supposed to be for one night due to a mistaken one-night stand. The real fun in the story comes from how the two protagonists’ lives continue to get entangled through a series of random encounters and all the meddling of their families. The sense of the two people being forced by fate into dealing with each other time and again is relentless and almost comedic, given how different they are.

Wait. Which Payback is that even? I only know of two BL stories with that title; one’s a Korean novel, most likely, set in a revenge plot, and the other’s a Chinese web novel. Where would I search for that? If it’s the Korean novel then I’d look for the raws on sites like KakaoPage or Ridibooks.

As there is no official English translation available for ‘Payback’, we rely on fan efforts to translate this BL novel. I recommend checking out the Korean BL communities on Discord, as these channels are usually sorted by title and completed translations are linked. Note that most of these servers require an invite link, which can be found on the Twitter accounts of the translators or in the respective server’s descriptions. Although it may require a bit more effort, translated content on these servers is usually very well formatted and up-to-date.

Oh oh ‘Killing Stalking’… I read that one a while ago on Lezhin and it completely twisted me around in every way. The tension between the two leads is just incredible and the art is fantastic and perfectly captures the eerie atmosphere of the whole thing. For those interested in reading it legally, I know Lezhin and Tappytoon have it.

Please don’t read this on some of the ‘other’ websites that come up in your search as they can contain malware. I’ve listed a couple of other alternatives that are just as good at the bottom of this post. Warehouse and The Pawn’s Revenge are two other alternatives that are just as good at causing you sleepless nights. Just make sure you read something light and fluffy afterwards though!
