How To Read Wattpad Novels On Kindle?

Question

Before investing in Kindle Unlimited, I'd love some advice from other ebook readers on getting mobile stories onto my e-reader. Are there any tricks for sideloading stories off the web?

There are several ways to transfer your Wattpad stories to your Kindle. You can use the web version of Wattpad and use ‘Send to Kindle’ to send the entire story to your Kindle email as a document. Some Wattpad authors even publish their serialized stories as ebooks on other platforms. I recently came across Wicked Pleasures [Steamy Short Stories] which is a compiled Kindle ebook of his standalone short stories. This is formatted for ebook readers and can be easily downloaded to your Kindle rather than having to transfer individual stories.

Book blogger trick: For books published on Inkitt and/or Radish I can get them to show up in Kindle “deliver to Kindles” list. For Wattpad books I’m currently scanning individual chapters and emailing them to Kindle as PDFs via Google Docs (it’s a pain but comments are a huge part of the story and with Wattpad they get lost when I “read” them there – kinda like watching an anime and following tweets about it at the same time).

After weeks of fiddling, I finally worked out how to get Wattpad stories on to your Kindle – and it's pretty easy. Note that not all Wattpad stories can be downloaded as an EPUB (some need a premium membership to do this), but those that can can be sent to your Kindle from your computer in a single step. You simply email the EPUB file to your Kindle's email address with the subject 'convert' and Amazon's servers do the rest to convert it into the correct format for your Kindle.

There is just one gotcha though. When you read serialized fiction like The Love Hypothesis (originally a Wattpad hit), there can be formatting issues. This is especially a problem when there is lots of comment interaction and multimedia integrated into the story. So while reading this type of content on my Kindle is far better for me than on my phone (glare on my phone makes for long reading sessions very painful), sometimes the Wattpad content can look strange. I use Calibre (free) to manually correct the metadata in the EPUB, which seems to fix the problem with how the title of the book displays in my Kindle library.

I accidentally discovered this way to read an unfinished manuscript of a friend's. I used OnlineConvert to convert the Wattpad HTML to MOBI and then sideloaded it to my reader via USB. This method is best suited for shorter works, 50+ chapter epics may behave erratically. I found that 'Chapter 23' would repeat 12 times in a werewolf romance manuscript I was testing, but that's worse than ads in critical parts of a story than this!

As a regular Subway traveler I rely on my Pocket-to-Kindle workflow. The ‘Push to Kindle’ browser extension is brilliant and reformats web pages beautifully as articles on the Kindle. It’s not perfect for poetry or for script though. But for long text-based serials it’s a lifesaver. I’ve read to complete several long Korean webnovels on my Kindle while squinting at my phone screen in the dimly lit Subway, but that’s much better!

My daughter who is now a teenager bombarded me with this question last month. I explained to her that you can download a Wattpad story through the 'Download' button on the three dots on the top right corner of the story page. You can then transfer the downloaded file to your Kindle by dragging and dropping it into the 'Documents' folder when your Kindle is connected to your computer via USB. Yes, it's that easy! No emailing of files to your Kindle and you can even download fanfics or that indie novel 'After' before it hits mainstream publishing. Just a word of caution – you will need to clean out your Kindle from time to time as my daughter's has 200 unread vampire stories.

I’ve seen that there are paid stories on Wattpad too as part of their Paid Stories program. Wonder if these get detected by the conversion tools too or if they get blocked by Wattpad somehow. Ethically speaking, I think it’s slightly different when you’ve paid coins to unlock chapters. Of course, it’s your money, so you should be able to read your purchased stories in whatever format you like, but the platforms don’t usually look at it that way. As mentioned for free stories, I would approach these with caution as well. Even more so, maybe. My gut feeling is that once you’ve paid for something, you should be able to read it wherever you want to, but so far the platforms don’t seem to see it that way.

I've put my first story up on my Paperwhite and it feels kind of... blank. It's readable, that's good. But it doesn't have the same sense of progression as the app's infinite scroll, and it's nowhere near as fun to read when I can see how many people have voted for each chapter and add my own vote to the mix. For deeply-plotted novels, this is fine. But for a lot of the super-popular stories on Wattpad that are read by millions of people and become huge trends for weeks or even months at a time, the experience just loses a lot of energy. It really drives home just how much the medium determines the impact of a story.

A screen reader user of mine is using text-to-speech on Wattpad stories by pasting the content into Google Docs and then using the screen reader on Google Docs or an external TTS app to read it as an audiobook while he does his chores. While not reading a physical book on a Kindle, this is another way to read content (Wattpad stories) hands-free and away from his phone. He could then send the Google Doc as a PDF to his Kindle, but the audio would likely satisfy his need to read content away from bright screens. Another angle to consider when transfer is such a pain.

As someone who devours both traditional ebooks and webnovels, I’ve recently found that the ultimate answer to this eternal conundrum is to simply invest in an Android e-reader. Yes, they’re typically very expensive, but for me, they’ve been well worth it. Because, unlike traditional ebooks, webnovels can usually be read through the full, official app experience on these Android e-readers – all without having to convert or worry about any potential loss of formatting or missing comments. My Kindle is still much-loved for my proper books, but my Boox e-reader has taken center stage for my web serials.
