Read the novel first. The comic is great, but the original text has a rawer, wittier edge that the visuals can't fully capture. The plot beats are the same, so you won't get lost, but the novel delivers the full impact of the satire and character development. Once you're done, the manhwa feels like a celebratory re-read.

Alright, so figuring out the reading order for 'Beware of the Villainess' can be a bit of a puzzle. The main dish is the original webnovel, which is the full, unadapted story. That's where you get all the inner monologues and plot details the manhwa sometimes skips.
Then there's the manhwa adaptation, which is fantastic and a great starting point. If you're coming from the comics, I'd suggest reading the webnovel from the beginning anyway—the tone is a bit different, more snarky. Some fan sites have the novel split into 'seasons,' but it's really just one continuous story. I jumped from the manhwa's Season 1 finale right into the novel around what would be chapter 110-ish of the comic, and it was seamless.
Honestly, the only extra material is maybe some side stories from the author's blog, but they're not essential. The novel's ending wraps everything up neatly on its own.

Man, I see this question pop up all the time. Honestly? Just read the webnovel. The manhwa is a fun, pretty adaptation, but it condenses a lot of Melissa's sharper commentary and the political machinations. You lose some of the flavor.
I tried reading them side-by-side for a while, but it got confusing with pacing differences. The novel is complete, so you can just binge it straight through. Don't overcomplicate it with 'seasons'—that's more a webcomic publishing thing. Start at chapter one of the novel, finish it, and then look at the comics as a bonus visual treat. That's the cleanest way.

Yan Zi, a botanist and author, accidentally transmigrated into her own historical novel as the notorious villainess. She meets Xu Kai, the handsome Co-Commander of the Imperial Military Guards, who is attracted to her during their dangerous missions together. However, knowing that she will not have a happy ending as a villainess, Yan Zi refuses to fall in love with Xu Kai. But somehow after escaping an unexpected intruder attack, watching the stars under the waxing moon, and spending a sweet and sweaty night together, everything starts to change..
I transmigrated into the role of a gorgeous villainess, tasked with tormenting my childhood buddies.
I forced Maddox, Mr. Tough Guy, into putting on a sexy dress, essentially killing his chances of a social life.
I grabbed the bottom of the ever-aloof Zane and made him red in the face.
I kicked Damian, the crybaby, into the ground, and all he could do was glare at me through his tearful eyes.
My aggressive antics only fueled their resentment.
“One of these days, I’ll get you.”
I winked at them without a care. “I’ll be waiting.”
The day they crossed paths with the female lead would be the day I left this world. Their revenge didn’t scare me one bit.
Little did I know, the time would come when I would be proven wrong.
While I scrambled to get away in tears, he said softly, “Save your strength. The night is still young.”
She died once in fire while the man she loved watched her burn without a single step forward.
Elena Vale was the villainess of a romance novel—written to be hated, destroyed, and discarded at the end of the story.
And she did die exactly like that.

A woman who does not beg for love.
A woman who builds power instead of tears.
A woman who turns her ending into a beginning of destruction.
And as she rises, something strange begins to happen.
The male lead who once ignored her starts watching.
The heroine who was supposed to replace her starts trembling.
And the system that once promised her survival begins to warn her:
[WARNING: Villainess behavior exceeds original plot limits.]
But Elena is no longer afraid of the story.
She is rewriting it.
And this time… she will be the one they fear.

Blaire was out on a cruise with her family for the first time. However, due to a certain circumstance, the moment she opened her eyes, she arrived in the world of novel as Victoria Nightingale, the Forgotten Princess of the Kristania Empire. In order for Blaire to go back to her world, she must fulfill the conditions Victoria set before her: Win her father's love and make herself as the Empress. As a side character, it is completely impossible to change the flow of the story unless she becomes a villainess who breaks her miserable and cruel fate.
Upon meeting the 2nd Male Lead of the novel, an idea crossed her mind. "If you agree to the contract, I will become your temporary wife and together, we will kill the Emperor!"
Will Blaire succeed and be able to go back to her world?
Thinking about adaptation potential, the main series has a clear three-act structure per volume, building to the climax in Volume 4. It’s structured like a classic romance epic. The spin-offs are sitcom episodes.
You wouldn’t watch a sitcom episode in the middle of a movie’s second act. Apply the same logic here. Enjoy the cinematic sweep of the main story, then tune in for the weekly comedy episodes afterward.
Volume 3 of 'Beware the Villainess!' is where the story really hits its stride, and I couldn’t put it down! The first two volumes set up the world and characters, but this one dives deeper into Melissa’s growth as she navigates the tropes of the otome game with her sharp wit and rebellious spirit. The dynamic between her and Nine becomes even more compelling, with moments that had me laughing out loud and others that tugged at my heartstrings.
The pacing is fantastic—just when you think things might slow down, there’s a twist or a hilarious confrontation that keeps you hooked. The art also shines in this volume, especially during action scenes where Melissa’s expressions are pure gold. If you enjoyed the earlier volumes, this one will feel like a reward. It’s packed with enough charm and subversion to make it a standout in the genre. I finished it in one sitting and immediately wanted more.
Is there even a confirmed order? I've seen three different lists on various fan wikis, and none match perfectly. This is why I usually wait for a series to be complete before diving in; the piecemeal release of webnovels with bonus content creates a mess. The author sometimes releases sidestories on their blog that aren't collected neatly.
My advice is to read the main arc from start to finish, then search for any sidestories with the main couple's tag. Trying to integrate every little extra as you go will interrupt the flow for minimal payoff.
I picked up 'Beware the Villainess!' on a whim, and wow, was I pleasantly surprised! The first volume throws you right into the story with a refreshing twist on the typical villainess trope. Instead of the usual revenge plot, the protagonist, Melissa, is hilariously self-aware and just wants to live her life without getting dragged into drama. The art style is vibrant, and the pacing keeps you hooked—I finished it in one sitting.
What really stands out is how the series pokes fun at common romance novel clichés. Melissa’s deadpan reactions to the over-the-top male leads had me laughing out loud. If you’re tired of predictable isekai stories, this one feels like a breath of fresh air. I’m already itching to get my hands on Volume 2!
