Oh, publication order, no question. 'Still Life' is the first, and you should absolutely begin there. The charm of this series isn't just the mysteries, which are clever, but the way the village and its residents change and grow over time.

Starting with a later book would be like walking into a family reunion and not knowing why everyone is giving that one uncle the side-eye. You'll miss all the history. Penny plants seeds in early books that bloom much later. I made the mistake of reading a later one first and spent the whole time confused about personal dynamics I should have already understood.

I'd say publication order is 95% essential. The only slight exception might be the first book, 'Still Life'. It's good, but it's arguably the most straightforward cozy mystery of the bunch. If you find it a bit slow, know that the series deepens dramatically.

But you still have to read it. Key relationships—Gamache and his team, the core villagers—are established. The alternative is reading a summary online, but that's a dry way to meet these vibrant characters. Just power through it; the investment pays off by book four or five, when you're fully immersed in this world and its ongoing saga.

Let me put it this way: the mystery in each book is solved by the end. But the story—the story of Armand Gamache's career and soul—is not. That story unfolds over the entire series. So if you only care about 'who killed this person,' you could jump in anywhere. But if you care about 'why does Gamache make this choice, and why does it hurt so much,' you need the history.

Start with 'Still Life'. Watch the man walk into that village for the first time. Everything that comes after echoes that first encounter.

In what order should I read Louise Penny books?

I'm waiting for the next one to come out in paperback. In the meantime, I'm just re-reading the whole series in order again. You notice so many more connections the second time through—little hints Penny dropped three books before a big reveal. It's a masterclass in long-form plotting. Honestly, reading them in order the first time is great, but reading them in order a second time is a whole new level of appreciation. It all fits together so meticulously.
