The later spin-off series ('Legacies Reborn', 'Return to Zero') were co-written by a new author, Jobie Hughes, taking more of a lead. The writing style is noticeably different—some say smoother, some say more generic. That's another reason to treat them as separate from the original Pittacus Lore books. The voice changes, so it's okay to think of them as a different series set in the same world.

The series morphed from a tight survival story into a sprawling superhero universe. The reading order reflects that. The first book is almost a standalone teen-on-the-run thriller. By the time you get to 'Legacies Reborn', it's about a government academy training teen superheroes. So your preferred order might depend on which genre you like more. If you prefer the early, paranoid vibe, maybe stop after the main series. If you want X-Men style world-building, jump into the spin-offs.

It's a YA series at heart, so the reading order isn't as rigid as, say, a complex adult fantasy saga. The books are fast-paced and remind you of key points frequently. You could probably read them in a dozen different orders and still grasp the good vs. evil story. So don't stress too much about perfection. Pick up 'I Am Number Four' and let your interest guide you. If you love it, you'll naturally seek out what's next.

I only wanted to survive senior year. Keep my head down, graduate, and leave Blackthorne Academy behind. But the moment I stepped through its iron gates, I became prey.
The Academy is wrong in every way—no mirrors in the dorms, wolves howling during study hall, and strict orders to never leave your room on red moon nights. And then there are the four Alphas who have marked me with their eyes, their obsession, and their danger.
Ronan Veyr, the storm-eyed heir destined for the crown, who recoils at my touch yet can’t seem to stay away.
Cassian Drax, the golden boy trickster whose dangerous smile hides a ruthless streak.
Malachai Frost, the untouchable prodigy who shadows me like a silent warden.
And Professor Adrian Vale, the man who looks at me as if I’m a memory he can’t bury.
They shouldn’t want me. I have no wolf, no pack, no power. But whispers of a legacy trail me through Blackthorne’s haunted corridors—a bloodline strong enough to crown kings… and dangerous enough to kill for.
Strange visions tear through my body whenever one of them is near. My strength is rising, my secret unraveling, and I’m beginning to understand why my mother died to protect it.
Because I am not wolf.
I am something older. Something every Alpha was born to obey.
And if I want to leave Blackthorne alive, I must decide:
Will I let one of them claim me—
or will I rise to command them all?

My reading order recommendation is purely chronological within the story’s timeline, but that’s not the simplest for a first timer. If you want simplicity, go with the numbered sequence: Books 1 through 7 as listed on most storefronts. That’s 'I Am Number Four', 'The Power of Six', 'The Rise of Nine', 'The Fall of Five', 'The Revenge of Seven', 'The Fate of Ten', and 'United as One'.
Chronological order would involve weaving in the 'Lost Files' novellas, which show events before and during the early books. But that’s a project for a re-read. The first book drops you right into John’s life on the run, and that’s the best way to start. You learn about the world as he does. Adding prequel material upfront ruins that deliberate mystery.
