Honestly, I think the best entry point is the manhwa. The art is such a huge part of the appeal, and the pacing is faster and more visual than the novel's sometimes repetitive stat screens. Start with the manhwa from chapter one. If you get totally hooked and finish it, then go back and read the web novel for the extra inner dialogue and world details you missed. That's what I did, and going back to the novel felt like getting deleted scenes. Trying to read the novel first might feel like a slog if you're not already invested, whereas the manhwa grabs you immediately. The side stories? Read the 'Arise from the Shadow' ones after the main manhwa concludes. They're a nice epilogue.

I've seen debates about this. Strictly by publication, it's the web novel first. But most people I know just read the manhwa. The novel has more exposition, but the manhwa's adaptation is the definitive version for a lot of fans now. The anime follows the manhwa's beats pretty closely. If you care about the complete authorial vision, track down the novel. If you want the most popular and accessible version, the manhwa is it. The order isn't super critical as long as you avoid the side stories before finishing the main plot.

My take is a bit contrarian: I don't think the order matters nearly as much as people say. The core plot is the same across versions. I started with the anime, then caught up with the manhwa, and finally skimmed the novel parts I was curious about. Each medium has its own strengths—the anime's music, the manhwa's paneling, the novel's detailed skill descriptions. You won't ruin the experience by picking one. The only real rule is to absolutely not read the side stories, often called the 'after stories', until you've seen Jin-Woo become the Shadow Monarch. Those are pure epilogue material and will spoil the entire final arc. Everything else is interchangeable based on whether you prefer text or comics.

Navigating the 'Solo Leveling' reading order can be a little confusing because of the different formats. The core story started as the Korean web novel 'I Level Up Alone'. The easiest way is to start with that original web novel, either from the beginning or by finding a reliable fan translation. That gives you the foundational story, the internal monologues, and the full scope of the world-building that sometimes gets condensed elsewhere.

After the novel, you can move to the manhwa (the digital comic). It adapts the novel faithfully for the most part, but with stunning artwork that really brings the dungeons and fights to life. Some character moments are streamlined, though. Reading the novel first made me appreciate the manhwa's visual interpretation more, rather than feeling like I was missing details. There's also an anime now, but it's a very condensed version—fine for the spectacle, but the novel and manhwa have much more depth.

Beyond the main story, there are side stories that came after the novel's conclusion. They're essential if you want closure for certain characters, especially Cha Hae-in and Sung Jin-Woo's family. I'd save those for absolute last, after you've finished the main novel or manhwa arc. Jumping into them early would spoil the ending of the primary narrative.

I'd recommend the manhwa first. It's the most engaging way to experience the story. The artwork during the fight scenes is incredible and you get the core narrative without getting bogged down. After you're done, if you're hungry for more, seek out the complete web novel translation. That's where you'll find the extended system explanations and some additional dungeon arcs that were trimmed. Save the side stories for last.
