I messed up my order and read III before II because the description grabbed me. It was confusing at first with all the new lore and far-future setting, but I caught on. Still, I wouldn't recommend it. You miss the emotional payoff of seeing how the Tang Sect evolves. Stick to the numbers for the main five. It's the safest path to avoid spoilers and enjoy the character arcs as they were written.
Honestly, I think people overcomplicate this. Just read them in numerical order: 'Soul Land', then II, III, IV, V. That's the publication order for the main series, and it works. The later books will reference earlier events or have descendants of previous characters, and you'll get those little nods if you go in order. Jumping to the prequel (V) first would spoil some of the mystery around Tang San's origins in the original novel. The spin-offs are optional extras for superfans—tackle them whenever you have the time and interest, but they're not required for the core saga. I tried reading 'The Legend of the Divine Realm' after II and it was fine, but it definitely makes more sense if you've finished the original trilogy at least.
I've seen this debate a lot in the fan communities. The consensus for a first-timer is almost always publication order: 1, 2, 3, 4, then the prequel (5). This preserves the reveals and world-building as the author intended. 'Soul Land II' directly continues the societal legacy of the first, while III and IV leap forward into a more sci-fi cultivation era. Reading V last gives you a fresh, deeper look at the foundation myth after you already care about the outcome. Some hardcore fans read in chronological story order (5, 1, 2, 3, 4), but I'd only advise that for a second read-through. The spin-offs exist in a shared universe but have a different vibe; 'Skyfire Avenue' is often considered its own thing with loose connections. If you're burning through the main books, you probably won't want to break the flow for them anyway.
So, 'Soul Land' got me so hooked I started hunting down everything Tang Jia San Shao wrote, and the reading order gets messy fast because of the web novel serialization and the multiple storylines. The main series, the original 'Soul Land', is definitely where you start. It's Tang San's journey, and everything else builds from that. After finishing it, I'd say jump into 'Soul Land II: The Unrivaled Tang Sect', which continues the legacy but with a new protagonist. It feels like a natural progression of the world.
Where it gets tricky is with 'Soul Land III: The Legend of the Dragon King' and 'Soul Land IV: Ultimate Fighting'. They're set further in the future, and while you could read them after II, there's a huge time jump. Personally, I read III and IV later and didn't feel lost, but the tone shifts a lot. The prequel, 'Soul Land V: Rebirth of Tang San', is a recent one. It's actually a prequel to the original, exploring Tang San's life before the events of the first book. I'd save that for after you're already invested in the character, because its impact relies on knowing who he becomes. The spin-offs like 'The Legend of the Divine Realm' and 'The Skyfire Avenue' are connected in the broader 'Soul Land' universe but are more like side stories you can explore if you're still craving more after the main sequence.
My two cents: Start with 'Soul Land' one, obviously. Then, I'd actually recommend reading the prequel, 'Soul Land V: Rebirth of Tang San', right after. It gives so much context to Tang San's motivations and his skills that it retroactively makes the first book more rewarding on a re-read. After that, proceed with II, III, and IV in order. The tone and tech level change dramatically in III and IV, so going from the prequel back to the more traditional cultivation feel of II might be a slight adjustment, but the character lineage threads are clearer this way.
