I find workplace rom-coms often force a good slow burn because the characters have to be professional. 'The Happily Ever After Playlist' by Abby Jimenez starts with a meet-cute but then quickly introduces the complication of the hero being the heroine's client in the music industry. The power dynamic and professional obligation mean they have to move very, very carefully.
The buildup is filled with stolen moments between meetings, secret texts, and the tension of wanting something that could jeopardize both their careers. It’s a realistic kind of slowness where adult responsibilities rightly delay the fantasy, making the eventual leap so much more satisfying.
Why is no one talking about the slow burn between side characters that sometimes outshines the main couple? In some series, I find myself skimming the primary plot to get back to the secondary couple’s will-they-won't-they. Authors like Nalini Singh in her Psy-Changeling series are masters at planting seeds for a pairing several books before they get their own story.
That long-term anticipation, built over multiple story arcs and through other characters’ eyes, is the ultimate slow burn. You see them interact briefly, hear other characters mention them, and your imagination runs wild. By the time they get their own book, the foundation is so richly laid that the payoff is immense.
Supernatural rom-coms can stretch a slow burn over centuries, which is fun. 'The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels' by India Holton has a very slow-burn subplot with a pirate and a proper lady thief. Their courtship involves flying houses, magical battles, and incredibly proper, veiled insults that carry the weight of long-standing, unacknowledged affection.
The slowness here is dictated by propriety and dangerous adventures, but also by their own stubbornness and independence. They are both fully realized, powerful characters with their own agendas, so merging their lives is a complex negotiation that takes the whole book (and into the sequel). The humor keeps it light, but the emotional undercurrent is strong.
Does anyone else get frustrated when a book promises slow burn but then has the characters hook up at the 30% mark? I feel cheated. I want the tension to last at least until the 70-80% point. The best ones make you doubt if they’ll even get together at all, making you turn pages just for one more hint, one more almost-kiss.
The anticipation is the whole point. It’s the lingering looks, the hands almost touching, the conversations that last all night. When it resolves too early, it feels like the story loses its engine. I need that delicious agony sustained, or I lose interest in the 'happily ever after' part because the best part—the chase—is over.

For sexy, mysterious Mexican aristocrat Diego Francisco Martinez del Río, Duque de Altamira, Jacqueline Maxwell was a gypsy, a weirdo living in awful conditions. And she was raising his orphaned baby niece in… a trailer!
So unacceptable!

Yes, she was poor but she was a real beauty, and with a little help, Jacqueline might become a perfect wife for a Duque. Graceful, beautiful... delightful, even.
Jacqueline Maxwell knew Diego and his kind all too well. He was as stunning and charming as the devil himself, but twice as ruthless and heartless. He was just a playboy interested in one thing and one thing only. And it had nothing to do with little Azura. Still, accepting his proposal of a marriage of convenience might be the end to all her worries regarding the little girl left in her care by Alyssa, her sister...
In the chaos and quiet of her 30s, a woman reflects on the loves that shaped her, the heartbreaks that undid her, and the tender spaces in between. Through fleeting romances, almost-loves, and the weight of expectations—family’s, society’s, and her own—she navigates a world where connection is currency, vulnerability is rebellion, and self-discovery never comes easy.

Can we talk about the setting as a character in these stories? 'The Unhoneymooners' uses the forced proximity of a honeymoon trip, but they have to call a truce and actually cooperate.
Watching Olive and Ethan go from bitter rivals to reluctant allies to friends who can joke around, all against this tropical backdrop, makes the eventual shift feel like a natural outcome. The fun is in the journey, not the destination.
