A lot of these suggestions are top-tier literary stuff, which is cool. But maybe just hit a used bookstore and grab an old issue of 'Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine' or 'Asimov's Science Fiction'. Genre magazine pulps. They're cheap, they’re full of solid, entertaining stories designed to grab you in the first paragraph and not let go. The literary pretensions are zero. It's pure story economy. You'll get a feel for the mechanics of a good short story—hook, development, twist—without any pressure to 'appreciate the craft.' Sometimes craft is best appreciated when it’s invisible.
