Are There Any Single Parent Romance Novels With LGBTQ+ Leads?

I’m very interested in the business aspect of Kindle Unlimited and how it has reshaped the way authors write within this particular genre. For many writers Kindle Unlimited has provided a sustainable income while other writers have been critical of the ‘formulaic’ writing that it encourages. As a reader Kindle Unlimited provides me with an almost endless choice of books to read, all for a flat monthly fee. However, I acknowledge that many of these books contain similar plots and it can take some digging to find the real standouts. As much as I wish there were more space in this commercial genre to let authors to express themselves creatively, I know that most writers have to strike a balance between what they want to write and what their readers expect. So, even though there’s a lot of repetition between books in this genre, it’s wonderful to be able to see an author’s growing style and increasing confidence over the long series of books that they write.

This book is so close to being a great pick for our LGBTQ theme, but it doesn’t have any themes related to that community. What it does have is some of the most heartfelt depictions of non-biological motherhood in children’s literature. Our main character Roz has chosen to be a mother and we read about how she learns to take care of her child and face danger in order to protect her. This book is representation of adoptive families, of foster families, of families built by choice. That’s its superpower. It normalizes and glorifies non-traditional families without having to make a big political statement about it. It just is beautiful and true. And that’s representation of a different kind.

Oooh I loved Things We Never Got Over on Audible, although I didn’t love the book itself I thought the male voice POV was super hot, and I also loved Lights Out on Audible!

What is interesting to note is that this type of character is depicted differently in various sub-genres. In Mafia dark romance novels the strong heroine is either part of the mafia family or has been brought into the fold and becomes very powerful as she becomes entrenched in the business of the main character. Examples of this would be novels like ‘Bound by Honor’ by Cora Reilly in which our heroine is a very strong character from the start who is part of the infamous Chicago Outfit. In Bully novels the strength of the heroine is in her ability to withstand the torture of her boyfriend(s) and survive without losing her spirit. The strong heroine in these types of novels also may play out the role of revenge for her tormented past. Science Fiction or Alien dark romance novels are also filled with strong female protagonists. In these stories the strength of the heroine is in her ability to be clever, resourceful and to make ends meet in order to survive in a foreign, even hostile environment. What does not work for these types of novels is for the female lead to be a blank slate. She needs to be brought to life and be more than the object of the male protagonist’s affections in order to be deemed highly recommended by readers and authors alike. The setting and context of the novel may change, but the one non-negotiable element of these dark novels is the strong heroine who is more than just a one dimensional character.

It’s really nice to see the cover art evolve away from the somewhat symbolic distant images of wheelchair users or a solitary, hazy figure. The new covers actually show us the characters. There are now a number of covers that feature couples: one of them uses a cane, another has crutches leaning against a wall, and in several instances a character is shown to be neurodiverse and their body language to be appropriately quirky. It’s an assertion that these are novels about these people. And on the shelves, that makes them look more ‘normal’ than their predecessors did. I wouldn’t want to judge a book by its cover, but here, I see increasingly progressive covers and I hope that what they promise is what’s inside.

One of the shoujo classics that I look to for a defining example of the genre is Maid Sama!. The main character Misaki Ayuzawa is the strict and hardworking student council president of Seijo High School. She secretly works at a maid cafe to pay for her family’s rent. The fact that she works to support her family shows her fierce determination and protectiveness towards them. Her love interest is the laid-back Takumi Usui, who is very perceptive and always figures things out. What’s so amazing about this manga is that he loves her for her strength and always supports her while also teasing her a lot throughout the series. This is a very funny and heartwarming manga, and despite containing many typical shoujo tropes, Misaki never gets diminished in order to progress the plot for her love interest. In fact, she is the main driving force behind the story.

The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray is another amazing YA novel that is good for adults too. It’s a historical fantasy mystery that takes place in 1895 and Gemma Doyle is a rebellious young girl fighting her visions, a mysterious magical order, and the strict rules of her boarding school. There’s a mystery surrounding Gemma’s mother’s death, a mysterious diary, and a hidden magical realm that Gemma must find. Gemma is an intuitive and powerful young girl who must fight against the repressive Victorian society around her, including the mundane and magical restrictions placed upon her. Bray looks at the topic of female desire and the bonds of friendship and the struggle to find power in these novels. I thoroughly enjoyed The Gemma Doyle Trilogy and found the setting of Spence Academy in the late 1800s to be claustrophobic and perfect for a Gothic style of mystery. As a main character, Gemma isn’t always likable, but you can’t help but root for her because she is so passionate and determined. I think what makes Gemma the strongest character in the trilogy is her friendships with her girls and how together they are able to push up against the boundaries set upon them in order to discover themselves and their place in the world.

This physical relationship is written with a great balance of tension and tenderness. Every touch (a hand on a shoulder, sharing a bed, desperate kissing) is charged with history and emotion between the two characters. There is also desire and physical attraction to each other, written in a way that is appropriate for YA readers and further defines the two characters in relation to each other. It’s not gratuitous sex. Instead, it naturally occurs as Simon and Baz grow closer. The two are shown as desirable queer teenagers, without being fetishized. This is so very important to represent in YA and ‘Carry On’ does it so very well. They are simply a normal part of a romantic relationship.
