Don't sleep on smaller, niche forums or dedicated Discord servers for specific pairings or crossover ideas. The main sites have the numbers, but the really passionate, detailed discussions and collaborative brainstorming often happen in those tighter spaces. I read an incredible, novel-length HOTD/'The Last Kingdom' fusion that was first serialized in a historical fiction fanfic Discord before it got posted to AO3.
The interaction is different. You can talk directly with the author as they're developing ideas, which sometimes leads to more ambitious or unusual crossover concepts that might not get immediate traction on a huge archive. It's less about popularity metrics and more about a shared, hyper-focused interest. Finding those communities is harder, obviously, but following an author you like from AO3 to their socials can be a gateway.

I've got a soft spot for the older, messier archives. FanFiction.Net still has a massive back catalog of HOTD crossovers, especially from when the show first blew up. The search function is a nightmare, but sometimes that's part of the charm—stumbling on a weird, unfinished 2022 crossover with 'Vikings' that has this raw, enthusiastic energy the more polished AO3 stuff sometimes lacks.
You do have to wade through a lot of dross, though. Tags are minimal, summaries can be vague, and the quality is wildly inconsistent. But I've found some surprisingly thoughtful character studies there that got buried on AO3 because they didn't follow popular ship trends. It's a different kind of hunting ground.

AO3 is overwhelmingly the hub for that kind of stuff, no contest. Their tagging system is basically built for crossovers—you can filter by fandom, character, pairing, and a million other things. Want to find 'House of the Dragon' mashed up with 'The Witcher' where Daemon Targaryen is the main character? Three clicks and you're there. The volume is just insane; you'll find crossovers with everything from 'Bridgerton' to 'Star Wars'.
What makes it work is the community curation. People are meticulous with tags, so you know exactly what you're getting into, whether it's a fluffy modern AU or a dark fantasy epic. The kudos and comment counts give you a real sense of what's resonating with readers. If a crossover is trending, you'll see it shoot up the rankings pretty fast. That instant feedback loop is something other sites don't really replicate as well.
Honestly, I rarely bother looking elsewhere anymore. The occasional gem pops up on FanFiction.Net, but sorting through untagged or barely-tagged fics feels like digging in a landfill compared to AO3's archive.

Tumblr's still a thing for this, surprisingly. It's not a hosting site per se, but a lot of writers post snippets, moodboards, and 'what if' threads that evolve into full crossovers. The reblog chain acts as a signal boost. I found my favorite HOTD/'Interview with the Vampire' fic through someone's elaborate aesthetic post there. The content itself usually links back to AO3, but the discovery happens in that chaotic, visual space.

The child they beg her to bring into the world is no wolf pup, it’s something older, deeper… and hers.
Now fire sings in her veins. Scales burn beneath her skin.
She remembers being Ayla. But they swear she is a queen, reborn through flame and fury, the last of the dragon-blooded line.
Torn between two lives, two names, two fates…
Was she reborn by fate’s hand, or was she always meant to rise?
