Oh, that’s a tough one because ‘spicy’ and ‘romantic suspense’ can pull in opposite directions sometimes—the thrill needs room to breathe, but the steam can't just feel tacked on. I found Sienna Chase’s 'The Safeguard' worked pretty well last year; the tension between the bodyguard and his charge felt genuinely dangerous, not just a backdrop for the bedroom scenes. The central mystery about who was after her actually held up, which is rare.
That said, I DNF'd 'Burn Notice' by some indie author because the suspense plot was laughably thin—like, the villain's motivation was ‘he was jealous’ and the detective work consisted of the leads making out in a crime scene. If the external threat isn’t credible, the romantic stakes feel cheap. My bar is probably too high, though; I grew up on old-school Linda Howard.
Honestly, I’d say check out Rina Kent’s 'Deception Trilogy' if you haven’t. It’s dark academia mafia-adjacent nonsense, but the pacing is relentless and the chemistry is nuclear. Not strictly 2023, but the final book dropped early last year.

I completely disagree with the common take that you have to sacrifice plot for heat. Harley Laroux’s 'The Dare' (yes, it's 2022, but the sequel 'The Bet' came out mid-2023) blends edge-of-your-seat danger with seriously explicit scenes in a way that feels organic. The suspense comes from the situation itself—a truth-or-dare game with a serial killer—not just as a vague premise. The romance develops through shared peril, which makes the physical moments feel earned.
A lot of the TikTok-viral ‘dark romance’ suspense titles from last year left me cold because the ‘suspense’ was just the love interest being a stalker. That’s a character trope, not a plot. I want an actual mystery to solve alongside the couple. Laroux gets that balance right, even if the prose is blunt. The sequel expands the game into a larger conspiracy, which kept me tapping my screen way too late.

Romantic suspense had a weird year. Felt like everything was either mafia or small-town mystery, both repeating the same beats. For genuine suspense where the spice served the plot, try 'Her Scottish Captor' by Maeve Black. Historical Highland setting with a kidnapping plot that slowly reveals political intrigue. The power dynamics are intense, but the danger feels real beyond just the romance. The love scenes are fewer than some expect from 'spicy' labels, but they’re pivotal to character shifts. Worked for me because the atmosphere was so thick with unease.

It's hard to narrow down a single 'best' list because steam is so subjective, but the books that got the most traction in my circles last year were definitely dark academia romances with morally grey leads. Ali Hazelwood’s 'Love, Theoretically' was a hit for the STEM rivals-to-lovers crowd, and it delivered that signature blend of academic tension and slow-burn payoff. But honestly, I think the real heat came from fantasy. Rebecca Yarros's 'Fourth Wing' obviously exploded, and for good reason—the dragon-riding school setting amps up the stakes, making the romantic tension almost unbearable before it finally snaps.
Don't overlook some of the monster romances that went mainstream, though. 'That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon' by Kimberly Lemming is way more fun and steamy than the silly title suggests. It feels like the genre collectively decided that 2023 was the year to stop being subtle, and I'm totally here for it. My TBR pile from last year is still mostly unread because I kept getting distracted by new, spicier releases.
2023 has been an exciting year for spicy reads. 'Things We Never Got Over' by Lucy Score is all over BookTok for its perfect blend of small-town charm and steamy tension. The chemistry between the grumpy hero and the sunshine heroine is off the charts. Another standout is 'Happy Place' by Emily Henry—her signature banter meets slow-burn passion in a way that leaves you breathless.
For those craving darker vibes, 'Does It Hurt?' by H.D. Carlton delivers twisted desire with a psychological edge, while 'Powerless' by Elsie Silver redefines forbidden romance with its electric dynamic between a single dad and his nanny. Don’t miss 'The Fake Out' by Sharon M. Peterson either; it’s packed with hilarious fake dating tropes that somehow make the spicy scenes even hotter. These books aren’t just trending—they’re rewriting the rules of modern romance.
Romance books have this magical way of pulling you right into the heart of emotions, and let me tell you, 2023 has served up some seriously spicy reads! First off, 'Things We Hide From The Light' by Lucy Score is an absolute gem. Picture a small town where secrets bubble beneath the surface and the chemistry between the main characters is off the charts! It’s steamy and sweet, with characters that feel so real you’ll find yourself rooting for their happily ever after. The slow burn in this tale is expertly crafted, leaving you longing with every turn of the page.
Then there's 'Book Lovers' by Emily Henry, which adds a dose of whimsy with its unconventional love story. Set against the backdrop of the publishing industry, this tale is all about rival literary agents, and trust me, the banter is deliciously sharp. The playful tension between the characters is palpable, leading to some seriously sizzling moments. Plus, there’s something about two book nerds finding their way to each other that just makes my heart flutter!
Lastly, for those who adore a bit of fantasy mixed into their romance, ‘Fourth Wing’ by Rebecca Yarros should definitely be on your radar. This book beautifully combines dragons with an emotional rollercoaster of war and love, bringing a uniquely spiced-up narrative to the table. The romance in this fantasy world is intense and captivating, making it one of those reads that keeps you up at night, turning pages to see what happens next! Each of these titles brings its own flair of spice, making 2023 a fantastic year for romance lovers!
