Just chiming in to say the Bachman Books, especially 'The Long Walk', are horrifying in a dystopian, psychological way. It's not supernatural; it's about a grueling walking contest where the penalty for slowing down is death. The horror is in the exhaustion, the mental breakdown, the dehumanization, and the sheer bleakness of the premise. It's a relentless, minimalist nightmare. For a new reader who prefers their horror to come from plausible human cruelty and systemic horror rather than ghosts, it's a devastating and unforgettable read. It proves King's horror chops extend far beyond the paranormal.

The Tommyknockers' is a divisive one—even King has criticized it—but its particular flavor of horror really got to me. It's not a tight narrative; it's messy and sprawling. But the core idea of an ancient alien artifact that slowly transforms the people of a town, making them invent terrible things while their bodies decay, is deeply unsettling. The horror is in the loss of humanity and the slow, inevitable spread of a cosmic infection. It's a book of body horror and paranoia. I wouldn't recommend it as a first King, but for a new reader who isn't scared off by a messy, ambitious, and genuinely creepy sci-fi horror saga, it's fascinating.

Dreamcatcher' gets a bad rap because of the movie, but the book has moments of brilliant, squishy body horror. The 'shit-weasels' are absurd on paper, but King makes them terrifying. The early scenes in the cabin, with the infected friend and the spreading red fungus, are claustrophobic and gross in the best way. It's a messy, ambitious book about friendship, aliens, and government conspiracies. The body horror elements are some of his most inventive and visceral. If you have a strong stomach and don't mind a plot that goes wildly off the rails in the best King tradition, it delivers some uniquely icky scares.
