When Will My Stepmom'S Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 Release?

News on Season 2 of that awkward romance anime My Stepmom's Daughter Is My Ex is so scarce. Honestly can't wait for more of that complicated dynamic between Yume and Mizuto.

Unfortunately, there is no official announcement yet for the second season of the anime. Typically, the release of an anime adaptation depends on several factors such as the availability of the source material, and the production schedule. I hope it’s released soon! I’ve recently been hooked by another take on the step-family dynamic with plenty of complicated emotional layers, ‘I Quit Being a Stepmother’. The main protagonist was married in a political arrangement, and after it breaks up, she has to search for a new identity and start anew, while still having ties to her stepson from that previous marriage. It’s a completely different take on step-relationship, and the redefined relationships of this woman and the various people around her are really complex and deeply human.

I’ve been constantly checking news sites for updates for “My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex” Season 2! The first season was a wonderful mixture of cringe-worthy scenes and a slow-burning romance, and I really want more of Mizuto and Yume’s confused daily lives. I’ve heard rumors that it will come out in late 2024 or early 2025 since the anime was great and there’s enough material for the light novels. But, so far, Studio Project No.9 hasn’t announced a release date yet.

The way the series managed to bring cringe to life, while also bringing depth to certain emotional scenes, really worked for me. Recently, I rewatched the majority of the first season and noticed a few foreshadowing moments in the flashbacks to when the two were children. If the anime is sticking to the novels then we will likely get to see the hot springs arc, as well as the school festival. My fingers are crossed for an announcement at Anime Expo, the voice actors have been dropping hints on their Twitter pages.

Waiting for the continuation of Ushiro no Sumadera is like waiting for Mizuto and Yume to finally make a move in their feelings. It’s agonizing but addictive at the same time. From what the director of the first season of the adaptation stated in a Nico NicoDoug interview, they “want to continue” but there are a number of reasons including licensing and studio schedules that are apparently in disarray. Looking into similar Rom-Coms that were adapted into anime, such as Rascal Does Not Dream, typically take around 3 years or so for each season to be completed, so hopefully 2025 comes sooner rather than later.

One thing I love about this show is that it subverts so many typical anime tropes in a very realistic way. The exes living under one roof could make for some really trite dramas, but the team behind the show really excelled at throwing their characters into tough, sometimes uncomfortable situations and making their struggles relatable. I’m really curious to see how they approach the ‘confession redo’ in Season 2 of the novels, but until then, I’m stuck perusing the few chapters that have been translated, along with a bunch of dubious Reddit “leaks”.

A curious case as a bookstore clerk who stacks light novels by the day. I just have to listen in to the discussion of customers. The anime stays true to about 3-4 volumes per season. And right now there are even more than 8 volumes out. Production committees usually decide about sequels after 18 months. This time the sales of the Blu-ray/discs were quite good though, so my guess would be winter 2024. Often the announcement of a sequel is made at the last minute though.

A fun piece of information from volumes past: in Volume 5’s afterword the author had teased ‘big screen plans’ and subsequently there was an OVA released. The manga has recently caught up and it’s clear that the publisher are making use of the other formats to increase the production’s cross-media synergy and most likely with the aim of a teaser trailer for an announcement of Season 2 by autumn.

I created a homepage on the Crunchyroll announcement page for the adaptation but haven’t found any updates yet. For reference, My Stepmom’s Daughter, so far the only work of mine to have been adapted into anime, completed the 1st season of the adaptation in September 2022. Generally, in the case of adaptations of mid-tier material, the 2nd season is released around 2 years or so after the 1st. At the recent anime voice acting convention Q&As I attended, I asked the cast a bunch of questions but they kept avoiding them because they’re probably still negotiating. Assuming they do manage to negotiate, I’m guessing it’ll be a spring 2024 release but as we all know, anime is delayed a lot these days. On the other hand, the light novel are still keeping me going – Vol. 7’s cover art looks great and they’re holding hands. Progress!
