The book mainly followed the development of the youngest son, Jin Runcandel, from an outcast to a strong and true leader of his family and of the sword. This development was made possible by his changing relationships with his siblings and the struggles he encountered. The loss of some of his allies and the painful betrayal of others made Jin even stronger. Their remaining relationships were real and earned. As for the ending, a big sacrifice was made and that event helped to further fuel Jin to reach the end of his journey in the best way possible. As for the duel at the end of the book, the prose was so vivid that every strike of the swords felt like it had great meaning and history behind it. As for the resolution of the plot, it was a very good subversion of expectations. Instead of an ending that culminated in a happy and neat little package for Jin, the author painted a more realistic picture of power and the responsibility that comes with it and how the burden of his family could either be a great pain or a great salvation for Jin.

His final duel with his father is a draw, showing mutual respect. The true struggle and victory of the Swordmaster’s youngest son is the tearing down of centuries old family tradition which had long grown to become repressive. Many of the supporting characters receive the development they deserved as well. The loyal servant of the family opens up his own dojo. The rival brother of Jin becomes his strongest ally. In the final scene Jin Runcandel stands before his mother’s grave, finally at peace. All of this serves to back up the story’s core theme: true strength comes from compassion. Unlike some other endings that feature a lot of conflict in order to reach a climax and will not be remembered long after the story is over, this one is filled with so much depth and emotion that it will be remembered for a long time after the story is over.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons, including the deeply satisfying and truly epic conclusion to Jin’s journey as the Swordmaster’s youngest son. That conclusion is marked by a fight to great depth where Jin utilizes all the wisdom he gathered during his long journey. Rather than battling an external villain, however, he must confront the deep seated toxicity in his family. A deeply moving and redemptive scene with the patriarch of the Runcandel family finally revealing the deep regret he has carried for so long behind his mask of cold authority was especially wonderful to read. In the end, Jin is able to bring about great change to the Runcandel family from within, tying up many of the loose ends including what happens to the exiled sister and the truth about their mother’s death. While there are certainly many ways that Jin’s journey could have ended, this author chose to bring about closure to an extremely satisfying and rightful conclusion to Jin’s long journey. And, after all that, there is great potential for future books, especially the tale of the mysterious group from another continent. Also wonderful, is how humble Jin remains, even in victory, refusing the title of patriarch and instead choosing to wander the earth as a hero to protect the weak. A truly wonderful, deep and satisfying hero’s journey, unlike others that have been written before.
