To sync OverDrive eBooks to your Kindle, borrow the eBook, select Read now with Kindle at checkout, and sign into your Amazon account to send the eBook to your Kindle. Note that your Kindle needs to be registered to the Amazon account you use to borrow eBooks from OverDrive. To test eBook syncing, I just finished reading Ravished By The Alphas (Reverse-Harem Paranormal Romance) this way, and it’s a great read – a fast-paced and fun paranormal story that follows the life of a fiercely independent woman who finds herself at the center of the demands of three powerful shifter packs. It’s available as a free borrow through many library OverDrive collections.

I use Overdrive to download e-books from my local library, and send them to my Kindle. After borrowing a title via OverDrive look for the ‘Read with Kindle’ option. This will direct you to the Amazon site, where you can choose to send the title to your Kindle, or read it via Kindle reading application. The book will then wirelessly download to your Kindle within a few minutes, as long as it is connected to Wi-Fi.
Just be aware that as an OverDrive book, the title will eventually expire and need to be re-checked out if you want to finish reading it. And yes, this method of book-getting has been working great for me for years, which is why I highly recommend it to book lovers of every stripe.

I've synced many Overdrive books to my Kindle. I go to my library's Overdrive website to borrow a book. I select the Kindle version and then Amazon takes care of downloading and making it available to me to read. First I have to make sure that I am logged in with my Amazon account and that my Kindle is associated with that Amazon account. Then the book just shows up in my list of Kindle books and I can start reading it immediately.
One little tip I have for users is to force your Kindle to Sync the content after a few hours of borrows not showing up. Each Overdrive book has a due date for it, so it is very important to pay attention to the loan period of a title. This is a great way for book lovers to read lots of books without having to spend a ton of money!

If you have a Kindle, you can sync Overdrive books to your Kindle. To do this, you first borrow the book from your library’s Overdrive site. You then choose Kindle format. (Note that after you’ve chosen Kindle Format, Amazon will deliver the book to your Kindle within a few minutes. Make sure your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi. If the book does not show up on your Kindle after a few minutes, you may need to sync your Kindle manually.) Remember that since Overdrive books are borrowed, the book will expire and no longer be available to you after the due date for the book. Downloading the book before that date should allow you to read it without problems. The process works very smoothly.

I have found Overdrive to be a great way for me to borrow library books and have them delivered to my Kindle. First, I have to make sure my library is part of Overdrive and that I have a library card that is in good standing. Once I have completed these steps, I search for the book that I am looking for on my library’s website or through their Overdrive app. Once I find the book that I am looking for, I select ‘Borrow’ and choose the Kindle format. From there, I am redirected to Amazon.com where I log in and select the Kindle that I would like to send the book to. Once the book is delivered to my Kindle, it will show up in my library list.
Keep in mind that not all titles will be available in Kindle format. Also, since Overdrive books are borrowed, they will have a loan period and you will want to be sure to download the book before that period expires. Occasionally a title will not show up on your Kindle. If this happens, manually sync your Kindle by going to the Settings section and selecting “Sync My Kindle.” This one trick has saved me hours of aggravation and I hope it does the same for you.

Shared reading experiences for a fandom. I am part of a book club and we read books on our Kindles and use a private Goodreads group for our shared reading experience. We can add notes and highlights to our eBooks and if enabled, other club members can see the most popular parts of the book as well as their friends’ highlights. All highlights are synced to the members’ devices whether they added them on their e-reader or laptop. Thus, my highlighted quotes are synced and I can access them when I write my discussion post for the book club. Shared reading becomes a little less solitary thanks to this technology.

The cloud is your friend. All of your purchased titles are stored in the ‘Cloud’ tab, not just what you have downloaded. In order to view the same list of titles on your devices, you need to make sure you are viewing the correct filter. On your app’s library page, click ‘All’ or ‘Cloud’ at the top of the page instead of ‘Downloaded’. This will show you a list of all of the titles that you own, regardless of whether they are on the device that you are currently using. By syncing your library, you are also syncing the cloud view of your library and your current reading position. Make sure to enable Whispersync on all of your devices and visit the cloud view of your library regularly to click ‘Sync’. New purchases that you make on any device will be reflected in the cloud view of your library on all of your devices. This is not a file transfer situation. This is just a matter of acknowledging that you have a master list of titles in the sky, and each of your devices needs to acknowledge that same list.

I forgot to check whether the book I requested from the library was a PDF. Most PDFs don’t read very well on the Kindle – the text is typically too small and doesn’t reflow to fit the screen. You can “Send to Kindle” a PDF and choose whether to have it automatically converted by Amazon, or not. I’ve had the converted version be almost as bad as just reading the PDF on a tablet, but sometimes it works okay. The book is converted by Calibre to MOBI or AZW3 as well, but that is essentially random and depends on the quality of the PDF that was created. I would recommend just trying to read the PDF on your tablet. If you really want to read it on your Kindle, you could try sending it with “Convert” in the subject line of the email, and hopefully it will work out okay for you. A lot of library eBooks are PDFs of scanned book pages, so don’t read very well on any eReader.

Your archived items are also archived on your old device (even if you deleted them from your downloaded books list to make room). Now that you have a device with more storage, you might want to re-download some of these archived books. Make sure you’re viewing your library as ‘All’ or ‘Cloud’ and not just ‘Downloaded’. I discovered that I have a complete history of all my purchases over the last years, and can even re-download books I’ve purchased on sale years ago (I found three such books from 2017 that I had purchased but never read). I have found many people to misunderstand this function because Kindle books are not simple files that one can email to themselves. Kindle books are protected by Digital Rights Management and are meant to be read within Amazon’s eco-system. Therefore, to download books previously purchased, one simply registers a new device to their Amazon account and all of their prior purchases will download. I find it is like having a Netflix account. One does not transfer a movie from one TV to another. Instead, one simply logs into Netflix on the new TV. I wanted to be able to read on my phone, but I didn’t want to be tied to my Kindle hardware. The Kindle app for your iOS or Android phone or tablet works really well. You need to have an Amazon account to log in to the app and download books that you have previously purchased. For new books, you can download them to read on your phone as well. I have even added borrowed books (from friends and from the library) to my phone. I use Calibre to convert the book to a MOBI file and then I email it to my Kindle address.
One minor obstacle I faced was with books that had DRM. To get around this I occasionally use the ‘Unlock Ebook’ functionality within Epubor Ultimate (I’m very aware this is usually classed as copyright infringement, and thus use it sparingly). Otherwise it’s very easy to organize your books with tags. The ‘Send to Kindle’ functionality from desktop applications works very well for me with my academic PDFs, just check the supported file types on Amazon first.

I’m using the content server from Calibre with the free ebook reader Cool Reader. While not exactly syncing ebooks for free like the official apps of Barnes & Noble, Kobo and others do, it’s working great for me so far. Other indie ebook reader apps for Android, like ReadEra, seem to require manual backups of added ebooks, though. But for the tech-savvy type, running your own personal Calibre server to sync your whole library of books, including sideloaded ones, is certainly possible.

Another huge downside for Kindle fans of e-ink is that Hoopla books apparently use a different form of DRM that is not compatible with Adobe Digital Editions (on a computer) which is how some people manage to ‘lend’ EPUB books from libraries via USB. I couldn’t get Hoopla books to transfer to my Kindle. So Hoopla book readers will have to read the same books on Hoopla on another screen (backlit) or look for the same books on another service that supports Kindle transfer — e.g. Libby. For now this is a major reason I haven’t yet become a fan of a single e-book reader brand.
