Got a Kindle, phone, and tablet; my reading progress keeps resetting between each device. What's the trick for seamless library sync across all platforms?

This feature is easily managed by linking all of your devices to one Amazon account. Ensure that Whispersync for Books is activated for each of your devices within their settings. This feature ‘syncs’ up all of your current reading and complete library so that you can pick up and continue reading where you last left off on any of your devices. I have tested this out myself while waiting in a queue of shops recently and managed to devour the complete set of ‘The Alpha King’s Gifted Mate’ whilst also getting caught up in the early stages of another excellent serialized read. The tension in this particular book centers around a hidden magical bond which the main character is desperate to keep under wraps as he becomes increasingly embroiled in the threat to the King and the entire kingdom in a battle for political power.

One thing I really enjoy about Kindle is how easy it is to switch between my phone and my e-reader, picking up where I left off. This is all made possible by the Kindle feature called Whispersync, but you have to check a few things. First, make sure all of the devices you are using are linked to the same Amazon account. This might seem obvious, but I have several accounts that I use for different reasons. Also, devices will need to be connected to Wi-Fi or to have data in order to sync. Sometimes, if a book isn’t updating, I have to force it to sync by pulling down on the screen in the Kindle app, or by going into the menu and clicking ‘Sync’. Also, sometimes I have to go into settings and toggle Whispersync on and off in order to get it to work. Finally, be aware that any books that you have sideloaded (such as PDFs) will not sync, so you have to stick to Amazon’s store in order to get the full functionality of Whispersync. It’s a small price to pay, though, because it’s such a wonderful feature.

Make sure all devices use the same Amazon account. Whispersync will then synchronize your Kindle library automatically. If you want to sync manually, just click on the sync button in the app. In the settings of the app, make sure Whispersync is enabled. To get all of your Kindles (and your iPhone and nook and Android) to sync up to the exact same page, first make sure you’re logged into all of them with the same Amazon account. Then enable Whispersync in the settings for your Kindle reading application (under “Reading Options”). Press the cover of your current book to open it, and then either the app or device should automatically sync with your other reading devices. To manually force a sync, tap the three dots in the upper right corner of the book list and then click “Sync.” Note that Amazon’s method for adding self-loaded books to your Kindle library (via Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” button) also ensures that these books will be synced throughout all of your reading devices. Just remember to leave Wi-Fi turned on on each of your devices and they will be current instantly.

I use Kindle pretty frequently. One of the most useful things Kindle provides for me is syncing books between my devices. I have a phone, an iPad, and a Kindle, and all of them are linked to my Amazon account. I go into the settings for each of the Kindle apps on my devices and make sure that Whispersync is On. If I start reading a book on my phone, for example, within a few seconds it will sync to my iPad and to my Kindle as well. If for some reason it doesn’t sync right away, I can go into the menu for the app and tap “sync.” Often, the book will then open up on the new device that I’ve switched to, and I can start reading. If a book refuses to sync, I just delete it and download it again. This works every time for me. Note that you do need Wi-Fi, though. Without it, there is no syncing.

My library of Kindle books is spread across my iPod touch, iPad, and Kindle e-reader. I have managed to get the syncing of my Kindle books between devices sorted. I simply need to make sure that all of the devices are logged into the same Amazon account. The rest is then taken care of by the Whispersync feature, which synchronizes reading progress, highlights, and notes between all of the connected devices almost instantly.

To manually sync content on your Kindle, select Sync from the Menu on your Kindle or go to Settings on your Kindle, Select Sync My Kindle. You can also ensure that Whispersync for Books is On in Settings. Occasionally when a book will not sync to a new device, downloading the book on that new device will usually get it to kick in. Also be sure that all of your devices are connected via Wi-Fi, as syncing requires an active internet connection. With a large library it does take a little time to get everything to sync up.

I use the sync icon to keep track of syncing (whether it’s happening or not). A spinning circle means it’s syncing. A checkmark means the last sync was successful. An exclamation point means it failed to sync. If it failed to sync, look for the exclamation point and investigate the problem (e.g. make sure wifi is turned on, close the app and restart it, etc.). On the e-ink Kindles, the sync icon is in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. In the app, the sync icon is usually at the top of your library, or in the menu. Don’t assume it’s synced just because you finished reading. Look at the icon and if it has a check in it, you can be pretty sure that your notes, highlights, etc. have been saved to the cloud before you put the device down.

Do you use a VPN or very restrictive firewall at work? Most Amazon sync services are blocked by these types of connections. I couldn’t get anything to sync at my work and I eventually tracked it down to our corporate network firewall blocking off the ports that Amazon uses for sync. I have since been able to sync on my mobile or at home on WiFi. Many VPNs can cause issues with Amazon Sync as well. This is particularly true for VPNs that route traffic through countries other than where your Kindle was registered (e.g. your phone is in the Netherlands but your Kindle is a US registered device). Try connecting to a standard open WiFi connection and see if the sync completes for you. If it does, then you have found your culprit.

The cloud is your friend. All of your purchased titles are stored in the ‘Cloud’ tab, not just what you have downloaded. In order to view the same list of titles on your devices, you need to make sure you are viewing the correct filter. On your app’s library page, click ‘All’ or ‘Cloud’ at the top of the page instead of ‘Downloaded’. This will show you a list of all of the titles that you own, regardless of whether they are on the device that you are currently using. By syncing your library, you are also syncing the cloud view of your library and your current reading position. Make sure to enable Whispersync on all of your devices and visit the cloud view of your library regularly to click ‘Sync’. New purchases that you make on any device will be reflected in the cloud view of your library on all of your devices. This is not a file transfer situation. This is just a matter of acknowledging that you have a master list of titles in the sky, and each of your devices needs to acknowledge that same list.
