Anyway, skip the tier lists. Find a concept that sounds bizarre and give it fifty pages. You'll either ditch it or fall down a rabbit hole, and that's the real fun of it all. I ended up reading a crossover with 'The Magnus Archives' last week that had no business working as well as it did.

I don't know if I'd call them 'top' because that feels a bit official, but the ones I keep going back to all have a shared foundation in the core AU concepts like 'Glitchtale' or 'Underfell' crossing over with something else entirely. There's this older one, a behemoth of a fic, where the 'Dusttale' version of Sans ends up in the 'My Hero Academia' universe. It's less about power-level comparisons and more a bleak character study on guilt and finding a purpose after you've... done the unthinkable in your own world. The writer nailed Sans's voice, all weary sarcasm masking a bottomless self-loathing, and watching him interact with a world built on heroic ideals created this fascinating friction.

Another crossover that doesn't get enough love is with 'The Magnus Archives'. Think about it: a universe where fear literally creates monsters, meeting a universe where monsters are born from concentrated emotion and intent? They blend almost too well. I read one where Frisk, post-pacifist, becomes an avatar for The Eye, and the way their SAVE/LOAD ability was re-contextualized as a terrifying paranormal power gave me chills. It leans hard into cosmic horror while keeping the soul of the characters intact, which is a tough balance.

Archive of Our Own is the first place I check. The tagging system is pretty robust, so you can filter for that specific pairing and then sort by kudos or bookmarks. The character tags are usually 'Underfell Sans (Undertale)' and 'Underfell Frisk (Undertale)'.

I will say, the Underfell AU doesn't have as massive a fic output as, say, the main Undertale 'verse or even other AUs like Underswap. That means the really polished, high-kudos stories are a smaller pool. 'Bone Appetit' used to be a popular one that played with the whole chef dynamic, but I think the author orphaned it. Searching by 'Underfell' and then looking through the Sans/Frisk tag is your best method.

Sometimes you'll find gems cross-posted from Tumblr or FanFiction.net, but AO3 tends to have the most concentrated quality for this niche.

The other thing is, top-rated can mean different things. A dark, violent slow-burn might have fewer kudos than a fluffier piece, even if the writing is technically better. So I'd recommend reading a few of the highest-kudosed ones, then maybe checking bookmarks of authors you like to dig deeper.
