The ending to Volume 24 of “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” has left me buzzing for days now! Rimuru has finally reached the stage of evolution to become a True Dragon. Seeing him reach this point after all this time was so amazing. As usual Fuse-sensei links the story perfectly into the ongoing conflict with the Eastern Empire, not just focusing on raw power but also the diplomacy and the intricate relationships with alliances that Rimuru and Tempest have made. You see the support of Veldora and Milim particularly and just can’t wait to see how Fuse-sensei will proceed with the story. The ending has set up an amazing arc for Volume 25.

What really resonated with me in this volume was the bonds between Rimuru and his subordinates. His relationship with Shion and Benimaru in particular was so beautiful. Their loyalty isn’t blind, it’s earned through Rimuru’s kind and loving relationship with all of the members of Tempest. I really love how balanced this manga is between big action scenes and quiet scenes with the characters. It’s what keeps me coming back for more. And that cliffhanger was so painful. I need to know how the members of the Walpurgis Council react to Rimuru’s new status as a True Dragon.

This volume did a perfect job of ending the story while setting up others. The story of how Rimuru became a True Dragon was really good. It showed how he learned to harness the power of Veldanava. I enjoyed the fights in this volume, but most of all I enjoyed Ciel’s role in how Rimuru became a True Dragon. The AI really has so much more personality than most of the cast.

While it was a solid defeat of the Empire, it was really a testament to Rimuru’s intelligence in how he utilized his maps, Portals and various Barriers. Also, the final pages are simply awesome! That figure in the shadow has me fully convinced that Fuse-sensei is going to delve deeply into the multiverse in the next arc of this series. Fuse-sensei always delivers with these cliffhangers.

I’m so excited for the ending of Vol. 24. The scale of the final battle was incredible, and I spent minutes studying each page of the ‘Harvest Festival’ in which Rimuru transforms into a dragon. But the greatest highlights of the story are these minute details in which we can see the development of each character. I’ve already mentioned the regrettable Diablo, but what I wrote about him yesterday doesn’t even compare to this smirk of his in this scene in which Rimuru goes up to the heavens.

The political machinations within this volume are interesting as well and show Rimuru the various demon lords he has formed alliances with, as well as how he tricks and outwits the various commanders of the Empire. It’s all really good. And the art is very good as well. Dragon form Rimuru is swirly with an air of foreboding about him that looks really cool. I really wish Vol. 25 was out already. The teaser for the ‘otherworlders’ is already having me brainstorm all kinds of crazy stories.

It’s a classic case of the greater good, being an act of ultimate self-sacrifice to ensure the permanent safety of his friends and followers. Rimuru sacrifices the souls of his enemies to obtain this immense power. But is it justifiable? We get to see the amazing benefits to Shion and to Tempest and to all his friends who are now God-like. But we also get to see Rimuru’s detachment, the sheer amount of death that was required in order to get this sort of power. That’s not an explanation of a story, that’s the presentation of a classic moral dilemma, which is one of the most difficult and greatest challenges in all of fiction. And it leaves the audience to ponder the moral implications of what has transpired, which is more than most ‘power-fantasy’ stories can currently say they do. And that’s why it is good.

The signifigance of Veldora at the end of the series was largely over looked by many readers, including myself. The major scene going on with the evolution of Rimuru was contrasted by Veldora sitting in the corner of the room, grinning from ear to ear like a proud idiot. He didn’t see anything wrong with what Rimuru did, he saw the best friend in the world reach his full potential. From a true monsters perspective what Rimuru did was natural and even praiseworthy. The ending wasn’t a moral explanation for what happened. The ending was an explanation of the natural laws of power and evolution. It was a pure, uncomplicated view from a Supreme Being. The end of the series shows that while Rimuru is a human-like sensiblity born to a human, he is also a monster, and that clash of two worlds is the ending of the series.

The ending of the story recontextualizes a lot of the previously seemingly minor events and provides new insight to Raphael’s demonic lord and soul consumption analysis. Rimuru’s earlier habit of naming and creating soul links for the monsters in the underworld has also been paying off in a big way in this climax. Everything is carefully laid out in the DNA of the story, this is not an ass-pull it is a carefully cultivated harvest. Rereading the story with this knowledge has been a joy, because you can see all the tiny seeds he planted along the way. The world he created is one of power with rules and consequences, nothing important happens without some foundation for it.

Ends right after the evolution. After that no conversation for the aftermath with the light novel are shown. Only an explanation for the power scaling and skill acquisition of Rimuru is shown. The new skills of Rimuru such as ‘Ciel’ and ‘Turn Null’ are basically cheat codes that manipulate the reality. The emotional explanation for his new power is completely glossed over in favor of a cool transformation sequence. The ending was so cool and has very ominous undertones. I really wanted to see the characters’ reactions especially Veldora’s. Perhaps the next volume will continue from here.

Chapter endings for the manga version differ greatly from the anime, light novel, etc. For Volume 24 of Ranger Rule, one can feel Rimuru’s extreme stress and struggle when making a decision, as well as the enormous cost that he ultimately pays off for. It’s a huge arc that comes to a close, and meanwhile it foreshadows thefuture of the entire Tempest Federation. We also get to see the morally-gray actions of many of the characters, all the while questioning Rimuru’s actions as their leader. The art in the final pages is amazing. Typically, Rimuru is depicted as a happy, bubbly slime, but in these panels he looks empty, which is a huge contrast to his previous self. It’s less of a “Twist” and more of a character change up that has been building since the Walpurgis banquet. The final page is just silent, with a city in the background, showing the immense weight of what was just done. After reading it, it makes one want to go back and re-read some of the earlier volumes full of happiness, realizing just how far they have fallen. It’s not an explanation for the story, but a huge question mark as to the cost of becoming a true Demon Lord.

This all makes sense because Rimuru’s unique skill, ‘Great Sage’ (later Raphael), had been trying to figure out the requirements for becoming a Demon Lord since the beginning of the story. All this time he just didn’t have the data or energy to make it happen. The ending therefore isn’t a choice Rimuru made, but rather a very natural occurrence that was triggered by extreme circumstances. And because the skills in this world are what define the possible, this presents a number of complex moral questions. Was this his fault, or was he just following the rules of the world in which he lives? The characters are torn in both directions in the ending.
