The steps leading up to this relationship--slowly, imperceptibly, and never unnecessarily exaggerated--are one of the many ways in which Fruits Basket far surpasses the average high school drama. This realization does not occur while you are reading the novel itself, but later on it gradually dawns upon you, as you consider the characters, their give and take with each other which brings them to maturity with greater depth than just about any other relationship in this book. So the person still hesitating back there as to who Tohru winds up with, please keep this in mind: it's Kyo Sohma--a love undersupplied but deeply rooted, unselfish, true!
