A lot of the big ones are contemporary or romance, which is cool, but I live for when fantasy/sci-fi gets it right. 'Gideon the Ninth' is locked tombs, lesbian necromancers, and a gloriously sarcastic main character—the diversity is baked into the universe, not explained. 'A Memory Called Empire' has a lesbian ambassador navigating a complex imperial court; the politics are the focus, not her sexuality.
For a middle-grade pick that's everywhere, 'Amari and the Night Brothers' features a Black girl protagonist in a hidden magical world. It's fun, fast-paced, and her brother's disappearance drives the plot, not her race. Those kinds of stories where the character's identity informs but doesn't limit the narrative are my favorite finds on there.
BookTok's absolutely stuffed with great picks on this front. Off the top of my head, 'The Song of Achilles' is huge for a reason, and while it's a retelling, it centers a love story between two men in a way that feels epic and intimate. Same goes for 'Red, White & Royal Blue'—that book basically defined a genre for a lot of people, a proper rom-com with a bi lead and a prince.
For something grittier and modern, 'The City We Became' by N.K. Jemisin throws a bunch of wildly different people together as avatars of New York boroughs; the cast is massive and intentionally diverse across race, sexuality, and background. It's chaos, in the best way. Also, 'The Heartstopper Series' graphic novels? Not just for the art—they quietly handle coming out, mental health, and a sweet mlm romance without making a huge performative deal about it, which I appreciate.
Honestly, scrolling through the tags, you'll see a lot of love for authors like T.J. Klune ('The House in the Cerulean Sea'), Casey McQuiston, and Adam Silvera, whose books almost always feature queer leads of color. It's less about ticking boxes and more that these stories just feel vibrant because of who's telling them and who's centered.
Mm, I feel like the list gets a bit... predictable sometimes? Like, yes, 'They Both Die at the End' is on there, and it should be. But I get tired of seeing the same five romances recirculated when there's so much more. Have you seen any buzz for 'The Surviving Sky' by Kritika H. Rao? It's a sci-fantasy with an estranged married couple, both South Asian, trying to save their floating city. The world-building is insane, and the dynamic is so much more fraught and interesting than your standard will-they-won't-they.
Also, 'Legends & Lattes' is a cozy fantasy with an orc heroine who retires to open a coffee shop. It's low-stakes and lovely, and the side cast includes a succubus and a ratkin carpenter. It's not about trauma or conflict stemming from identity; it's just about people (well, beings) doing a thing. That kind of representation feels refreshingly normal.
Sometimes I wish the algorithm pushed the weirder, quieter books harder instead of just the ones that make for a good 15-second emotional reaction video.

"Please," I whisper as his teeth graze my neck, my body betraying every promise I made to keep him at a distance. "We can't—"
"Can't?" His laugh is dark, dangerous. "Your wolf is screaming for me, Fin. I can smell how much you want this." His hands pin my wrists above my head, his body pressing mine against the wall. "Tell me to stop. Tell me you don't dream about my hands on your skin, my mark on your throat." His lips brush my ear, voice rough with need. "Tell me, and I'll walk away. But we both know you're tired of denying what's between us."

“I want to taste you, can I?" He asked pleadingly. I was gonna say no, but the throbbing in my nether region said yes.
“Yes," I breathed shakily. He then started to kiss my hip bone trailing as he pulled my panties off.
“Raise your legs," he instructed and I obeyed. He pulled my legs apart and inhaled. “Exquisite," he praised as he lowered his head and gave me a long, luxurious lick.

My father, the Alpha King, did not want his daughter surrounded by Alphas chasing the throne, so he hid my identity and arranged for me to meet Adrian Vale, the young Alpha of the modest Silver Ridge Pack.
Father said Adrian had real ability. Unlike the court Alphas who knew only how to flatter power, Adrian had taken control of his pack young and kept it stable.
I wore a Chanel dress, a custom Cartier watch, a Hermès bag, and the moonstone bracelet my mother had left me. It was only a formal meeting, but since Father had arranged it himself, I chose to show respect.
Before dinner could begin, Adrian's childhood friend, Molly Veyne, stormed into the private dining room.
She called herself a gold-digger detector. Her eyes swept over my dress, my watch, my bracelet, and my bag before she laughed.
"Adrian, look at her. She covered herself in luxury brands so you would think she came from noble blood."
Adrian apologized and said Molly disliked women who dressed too loudly.
I chose not to lose my temper.
Then Molly dragged my Hermès bag under her shoe.
"A bag worth this much? How could you afford it?"
"Tell us, how many Alphas did you fool before you could pay for everything you are wearing?"
"You dressed like a princess because you want an Alpha to put a Luna crown on your head."
Her malice almost made me laugh.
I looked at the moonstone bracelet on my wrist.
Even if Silver Ridge sold every business it owned, Molly still might not be able to pay for what she had just touched.
After being humiliated by her fated mate, the Alpha’s golden son, and called a worthless omega in front of the entire Moonglow pack, Tiara’s world collapses. Even her favorite comfort, reading her beloved comic Hockey Star is Obsessed With Me, can’t save her from her pain. But one wish, saved through tears, changes everything.
Tiara wakes up inside the comic’s story, in the body of the tragic heroine doomed to fail the one man who ever loved her: Luke Thorne, the immortal hockey star who hunts under the moon.
She knows this story. Every twist. Every betrayal. Every heartbreak. But this time, she’s determined to rewrite the ending, to save Luke and maybe heal her own shattered heart.
But Tiara soon discovers she’s not the only soul who doesn’t belong in this world… and some people will do anything to keep the story playing out as it was originally written.
