I don’t know exactly when their schedules will clear but I believe forums for K-pop fans have been discussing when the members of ITZY will begin their military enlistment and it appears to be after their activities in 2025. So that would mean a hiatus of around 2 years or so from 2026-2027. I was reading the story ‘Contract Over: You’re Free to Go’ the other day. It is a story about how two people were in an obligatory relationship under a strict professional contract. It explores how the two characters search for what was real between them when the contract unexpectedly expires.

I’ve noticed that in the K-pop community there’s been a lot of speculation as to when each member of the group TXT will enlist for military service. As the oldest member of the group, Soobin (who was born in 2000) will likely enlist first, around 2025-2026. The rest of the members – Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai – were born in 2001 and 2002, so it’s likely that they’ll enlist between 2026-2028. However, because K-pop groups typically have their members enlist for military service one by one in order to minimize the amount of time the group is on hiatus, the entire group won’t disband until the last member has completed his service – which could be as late as 2030 or so if they decide to renew their contracts with HYBE.
Even though military service is mandatory for males in Korea, there are ways agencies can manage their artists’ enlistments. For example, HYBE, TXT’s agency, has already managed the military enlistments of artists like those in BTS, so there’s precedent for how to handle it. It’s possible that while the others are enlisted, solo or subunit projects will come out in order to keep fans satisfied. Also, in the unlikely case where one member is able to enlist early, it could reduce the total time of enlistment for all the members. Although there is always a chance that they will be disbanded after enlistment, many groups are reunited by their fans after their time of military service. TVXQ and Super Junior are great examples of this. With such close bonds between the members and a massive, loving fan base, there’s no reason TXT wouldn’t continue as a group of artists after their time of enlistment, even if it’s with fewer activities.

From a practical fan perspective, we should do our best to build a sound financial base for them right now. Stream their music, buy their albums, attend their concerts, support their endorsments. This fandom has a lot of staying power, and if we can show the company that investing in TXT's long-term future will be profitable, then they will have all the motivation to keep them around after enlistment. Our actions today will determine the options that the company has tomorrow.

There is such an unfortunate amount of math involved in K-pop when it comes to the oldest members of a group and their military service. Take the oldest member’s birth year, add 28 to it, and it gets so many people feeling sad. However, there is more to the agency’s strategy when it comes to this type of matter. Big Hit may deliberately space out the enlistment of service by so long that fans almost don’t notice the time in between. Or, Big Hit could have the entire group enlist at the same time in a bid to ‘get it over with’ as quickly as possible. While that may extend the time of hiatus for the fans, it would likely be less hurtful to them in the long run. I highly doubt the agency would take that route with this ‘OT5’ group, though. The method of extending the time of the members’ activities before they go one by one over the course of years will most likely be implemented by Big Hit instead.

This is a countdown clock that no one asked for. Although I try to avoid it, it is lurking in the back of my mind at every milestone. ‘This could be the last award show as five…’ ‘This might be the last tour before…’ It’s all so toxic. I’m trying to avoid this mindset and remember that every era is a gift. Let’s try to enjoy what they’re doing for us right now and give them our full attention instead of stressing about when it’s going to end.

There's a pessimistic undertone to 'When will it end?' and instead I would opt for 'How will they evolve?' Often, enlistment marks a major artistic shift for members, as they return with a brand new outlook on life and even acquire new talents to further express themselves through song. Given that the majority of TXT's discography so far is comprised of youth-filled tracks that document their progression into full-fledged grown-ups, I'm sure their next era will be amazing once they've acquired even more life experiences and perspectives.
Disbandment would cut that short. Since their musical style fits the theme of youth and growth, I’m pretty sure they’d want to document that experience in their future music. That’s why I see enlistment as a future album, not their funeral. Irrespective of the ‘when’, the story will continue and that’s what I’ll choose to believe in.

Unfortunately for IOI, the way the survival show was set up was in direct contrast with their ever-loving fans’ desires to have them as a permanent unit. Most survival show groups are designed to have short lifespans, but the abrupt nature of how IOI was handled made their demise particularly shocking to fans. So Bob Bryar is from Chicago or the suburbs? I thought he was from the Chicago area, so he'd be sort of the one weird Jersey guy. His drumming would tend to differ from their old punk sound and be more subdued. As for the rest of the band, they are all from New Jersey. Gerard and Mikey Way are from Newark, Frank Iero is from Belleville, and Ray Toro is from Kearny. It's kind of ironic that this very American band that is so about the suburban experience of one particular state is from the state that no one likes.
