It's the ultimate test of 'in sickness and in health.' The conflict is built-in: one partner is a predator, the other is natural prey. The passion has to be strong enough to override that primal wiring. I find stories where the human chooses to become a vampire less interesting than ones where they choose not to—where they force the vampire to love within the limits of a mortal lifespan. That sacrifice, from either side, is where the real, gut-wrenching emotion lives. The eternal part isn't romantic; it's the problem they have to solve together.

Vampires are such potent vessels for love stories because the 'forever' question stops being hypothetical. I just finished rereading 'Interview with the Vampire' and that final scene with Louis and Claudia in Paris? Devastating. The conflict isn't that love fades—it's that it doesn't. It calcifies, warps over centuries. You get this horrifying cocktail of absolute intimacy and profound alienation, because who else can understand a 200-year-old grief? The passion feels frantic because time is endless, so every moment of connection is both insignificant and monumental. It’s about loving someone enough to damn them, or watching the object of your eternal devotion slowly come to resent you. That specific torment is the core of the genre for me.
You also see it in contemporary paranormal romance, where the human lover’s mortality is the central ticking clock. The vampire’s passion is an attempt to freeze a moment, to possess and preserve, which is inherently violent. It’s why so many of these stories flirt with predator/prey dynamics—the line between consummation and consumption is razor-thin. I’m less interested in the brooding in a castle archetype and more in stories where the vampirism forces characters to confront whether love can survive the complete removal of societal norms and biological limits. The answer is usually messy.

Honestly, sometimes I think we get it backwards. The eternal passion isn't the point; it's the setup for the real conflict, which is boredom. How do you keep caring about someone after you've seen every version of them across five lifetimes? The best vampire romances I've read, like some indie-pub stuff that plays with time loops, grapple with that. The passion has to be constantly rediscovered, fought for, which creates a different kind of tension than human stories. It's not 'will they/won't they,' but 'how will they continue to.'
My contrarian take: a lot of vampire romance fails by making the vampire too human. If they just brood and have fancy clothes, the eternal angle is just set dressing. The conflict should feel alien, rooted in a consciousness that doesn't process time or morality like we do. Otherwise, it's just a goth boyfriend with extra steps. The ones that stick with me make the love feel dangerous because it comes from a place of fundamental otherness.
