Have you checked out the app 'Grandhalayam'? It's not a website per se, but it's a fantastic mobile interface that aggregates public domain Malayalam books from sources like Project Madurai. It makes reading on a phone much easier than dealing with raw text files. The selection is solid for true classics from the early 20th century.
For more recent classics, say from the 70s or 80s, you're entering tricky copyright territory. Some authors or their families have started putting up authorized free samples or even full works to promote the language. Following relevant cultural organizations on social media can sometimes lead you to these official releases.

The community-sourced model of Project Madurai is brilliant. It operates on the same principle as Project Gutenberg but for Dravidian languages. They have clear formatting guidelines and rely on volunteers to type, proofread, and upload. The entire collection is free to download and redistribute.
If you find a typo, you can report it. If you have a scanned copy of a missing book, you can contribute. This is how digital culture should work for public domain material: collaborative, open, and non-commercial. It's a shining example in an otherwise murky landscape.

This is a great question because accessibility is key. Beyond Project Madurai, 'Ezhuthu' is another online library worth a look. It focuses on presenting the works in a clean, readable format. They have a decent collection of novels by authors like Thakazhi and Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, though availability varies.
Remember, 'free' often means the site is ad-supported. I use an ad blocker when visiting these places because the pop-ups can be relentless. Also, consider supporting contemporary Malayalam authors by purchasing their works if you can—keeping the literary ecosystem alive lets publishers maybe one day digitize more classics properly.

Don't forget about digital magazines! 'Mathrubhumi Weekly' and 'India Today Malayalam' sometimes publish serialized classics or extensive excerpts as part of special editions. Their websites might have those articles behind a soft paywall, but you can often read a few for free each month. It's a good way to sample an author's style.
Following Malayalam literary critics and historians on Twitter or blogs can be incredibly useful. They often share links to rare digital finds or announce when a new work has been added to an archive. It's like having a personal curator for your reading list.

What's the definition of 'classic' here? Pre-independence? Mid-20th century? That changes the answer dramatically. Anything from the 1990s is almost certainly under copyright and won't be on free sites, unless the author explicitly released it. Focusing your search on authors from the early 1900s will yield far more results on the archival sites.
Make a list of authors from the period you're interested in. Search for each author's name on Wikisource and Project Madurai. You'll often find their collected works or major novels listed on a single page, which is more efficient than searching for each book title individually.

There's a treasure trove of websites out there for diving into classic novels without spending a dime! One of my favorites has to be Project Gutenberg. It's like the Holy Grail for book lovers. They have over 60,000 free eBooks, all in the public domain. You can find everything from works by Jane Austen to the epic tales of Homer. I love how easy it is to navigate, whether you're searching for specific titles or just browsing by author. And the fact that you can download them in multiple formats means you can read on pretty much any device! It's all super user-friendly and keeps me coming back for more.
Another gem is the Internet Archive. This site isn't just about novels; it's a digital library that offers a massive collection of free books, movies, music, and more. The book section has a wide array of classics and even some rare finds! You can borrow books and read them online or download them. I've stumbled upon some lesser-known novels here that have turned into unexpected favorites. Their scanning of older texts is often high quality, making it a pleasant reading experience.
If you're into the aesthetics of reading, then you might enjoy Open Library, which is actually a part of the Internet Archive. They create a neat, inviting interface where you can browse classic literature. Their goal is to have a page for every book ever published, and they’re definitely making strides in that direction. The community-driven aspect is lovely—you can even contribute by adding books or reviewing them. I love how it fosters interaction among readers!
For those who prefer a more social experience, Goodreads has a 'free books' section where users share links to classics and their favorites. While it’s more for community and reviews, I find it super handy for discovering what others enjoyed from the classic realm. Plus, with their reading challenge feature, you can keep track of how many classics you've tackled each year!
All in all, these platforms really make it easy to explore the rich landscape of classic literature without costing a penny. Whether you're revisiting old favorites or seeking out something new, each site has its own unique charm. I could spend hours just browsing through the titles, lost in the endless possibilities of literature and the stories waiting to be explored. Happy reading!
Remember library apps like 'Libby' or 'Hoopla'. If you have a membership with a library that has a good Malayalam collection (some in the Gulf or major Indian cities do), you can borrow classic novels digitally.
The selection is entirely dependent on what your specific library purchases, so it's a lottery. But if you hit the jackpot, it's free and legal. Worth checking before you spend money on other apps.
Nothing beats the thrill of discovering a treasure trove of classic literature without spending a dime! I've spent countless evenings curled up with timeless stories from Project Gutenberg—their collection is massive, meticulously formatted, and includes everything from 'Pride and Prejudice' to obscure 19th-century gems.
For more modern interfaces, Standard Ebooks takes those same public domain texts and polishes them with gorgeous typography. I once stumbled upon their version of 'Dracula' during a rainy weekend and ended up reading it in one sitting—the footnotes added so much context! LibriVox is another favorite when I want audiobooks narrated by volunteers; there’s something charming about hearing 'Moby Dick' recited by different voices across chapters.
