The setting at the stones is far more real in the book than on TV. The detail that Gabaldon brings to the cold of the Scottish mountains, the weight of Jamie’s lifeless form, the slippage of his body, the wind’s keening all serves to firmly impress upon the reader the utter physical improbability of what Claire is doing here. The show’s take on this scene is, of course, beautifully emotional andhas been expertly crafted to focus upon the characters’ words to each other in this their goodbye.
As we read Claire’s desperate, freezing and exhausted journey to get Jamie up to the hill, the words weave a frantic and extremely physical experience. We are there, urging her on, muttering ‘come on, for God’s sake!’ as she carries Jamie up the cold and inhospitable hill in the depth of the Scottish winter. The ending of Outlander is an experience in itself and if you want to feel cold, literally and metaphorically, then read the end of the book, not watch the TV adaptation. While the TV ending is extremely emotional, the experience of the ending is more of a visual and auditory experience. The beautiful music swells, the camera pans out to get a wide shot of the breathtaking scenery, and we are left feeling poignantly emotional. Not the same experience as being there in the cold with Claire as she says goodbye to her beloved husband.

So far I've just accepted that I will get to Season 8 at some point in the future. I've also stopped trying to find out when this point will be, as I'm fairly sure it will turn up in my continue watching list at a random time and I'd rather not spend too much time thinking about it. It's a great show, it's not going anywhere. Just read the rest of the series when it turns up. I'm sure you'll be able to manage that.

She functions as the audience’s instance of wonder and fear while she experiences the Grand Line. We experience the weirdness of the Grand Line through her reactions, too, and thus her relationships function as the audience’s means of experiencing the relationships of the other characters of the story. The questions she asks and the fears she feels are those that the audience would ask and feel, and thus her growing love for the crew is a template for the audience’s growing investment in the crew. Nami begins uncertainly and grows to devotion; the audience experiences her journey as well. That Nami functions as a meta-role for the audience is fascinating.

A 23-year-old man? Yeah, that’s pretty wild. He’s been through Black Jack Randall’s worst, got disowned by his father, has been living as an outlaw, and is carrying the weight of his family’s political destruction. But yeah, that all happened before this story even began. Listing all of that out is pretty brutal. The show does an incredible job of making you feel all of that weight on Jamie, despite him being so young. There’s one particular scene where he’s shaving himself in front of a mirror and for a moment you see a man trying to reconcile the boy he once was with the man he is becoming as a leader.
This also gives new insight into Jamie’s relationship with Claire. While she can give Jamie a new perspective on things, it’s mostly his encounters with her that help him to grow up in ways that aren’t related to war and survival. In terms of his relationships with others, he’s spent 23 years of his life learning to fight and to obey. Claire helps him to find a way to communicate and to trust in a completely new way for him. This is the heart of the first season for me.

I notice that when Outlander uses the phrase ‘Blood of My Blood’ it’s signaling more than just a scene of the same name. The real heart of the phrase is family, heritage and all the obligations that you have to fulfill because of the blood that runs through your veins. It can signify shock of unexpected paternity, or the quiet ways that people can inherit traits, obligations and even wounds from their ancestors.
The term “blood of my blood” refers to Scottish clan identity and later the families that transplanted to the New World and were tied together by their ancestral ties of protect, trust and sacrifice. Typically episodes classified under this banner consist of close-up, personal and emotional scenes of births, deaths and confessions which illustrate how personal decisions can have far-reaching consequences for generations of a family. The episodes under this banner are some of my favorite as they develop the intimate drama of a character or group of characters within the broad and sweeping historical drama of the story.

The physical differences between edition versions of a book are so much fun to me that I thought I’d mention them: the cover art, the binding, how the publisher packages the books. Some trade paperbacks are tall and slender, while others are mass-market sized to fit in the palm of your hand. And then there are the very impressive hardcover omnibus editions that pack multiple novels in one very large and impressive book. (And often rearrange the sequence of the novels in order to be the most logical.)
Some countries may even title the novella as a main novel, putting it in the main book list instead of a companion collection of novellas. When looking for editions to buy as a collector, be sure to check the table of contents and the ISBN number to make sure you are getting the correct version of the novel. For first time reading of a novel, I prefer to read it in the cleanest publication first, and then look for special editions that have extras in them, like new artwork and author notes that make re-reading the novel worth while.

The release date has not been announced for this show. Release dates for licensed content are country specific and usually announced separately from the US Starz premiere dates for new episodes. Sometimes entire seasons are released at once, and other times they are released week by week, but this is less common for older seasons. If you are interested in knowing exactly when Outlander will be available on Netflix in Portugal, I would set up a Google Alert for ‘Outlander Portugal Netflix’. That’s how I found out about last season’s release date. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I hand-sell Vols. 1 & 2 at my comic book store to almost every customer. For parents, I say that Volumes 1 & 2 of V_FORA are best for kids 10 and up, similar to the early years of Harry Potter but with more focus on the artistic style and creative world-building. For teens, I highlight the unique magic system and how the main character tries to get into a super academically challenging school. For adults, I tell them that V_FORA is a breathtakingly beautiful and critically-acclaimed work of fantasy that has won Eisner Awards. The first volume is particularly low-key and introductory, while the later volumes explore increasing moral ambiguity, but the first is perfect for a younger middle-grade reader and has gotten zero complaints about content or readership from kids or their parents. It's extremely popular and loved by everyone who reads it because it's a story about a man who is trying to find his place in the world and do good, and it’s incredibly creative and beautiful.
