Sometimes the old ways are best. I met my core group of readers through a mailing list in the early 2000s, and we migrated to a private forum. It's tiny, but the feedback is incredibly in-depth. Building a small, dedicated community can be more rewarding than chasing numbers on a big site.

Discord servers are the hidden gem. Many fandoms have massive servers with dedicated fanfiction channels where you can share links, get live reactions, and even brainstorm with readers. It's a more conversational, real-time way to build a reader base that feels invested in you as a writer, not just the story.

Co-writing or shared universes can boost visibility. If you collaborate with a more established writer in your fandom on a platform like AO3, their readers will often check out your profile and your solo work. It's a great networking tool.

Finally, remember that a great story will find its audience eventually, regardless of platform. A mediocre story posted perfectly on every site will flop. Focus on writing something you're passionate about. The platform is just the megaphone; the voice is what matters.

Think about accessibility. AO3 has great accessibility features for readers. FF.net's mobile app is widely used. Wattpad's app is designed for phone reading. Where does your target audience prefer to consume content? That should influence your choice.

What are the best platforms to publish my book fanfic online?

Back when I first started writing, the main choice was between FanFiction.Net and Archive of Our Own. FFN felt like the classic library, and AO3 the shiny modern archive. Now it's more about the specific fandom. Posting on the platform where your characters are most active is crucial. I've had stories vanish into the void on a site with no active readers for that pairing, but flourish somewhere else. For Harry Potter or Marvel stuff, AO3 is unbeatable for discoverability through tags. For older anime or some video game fandoms, FFN still has a dedicated, if quieter, community. Wattpad is its own ecosystem; it works if you're writing in a very popular, often YA-centric fandom and you don't mind the emphasis on cover art and algorithms. Sometimes I'll cross-post between AO3 and a smaller, fandom-specific forum just to reach both the broad tag-searchers and the deep-cut lore experts.
