This song was released when the internet was still in its very early days, so the song’s premise that distance cannot get between two people and that you’re not alone is kind of prescient. These days the song is often used in TikTok edits for pretty sad stories, and MJ songs get treated like a security blanket by a lot of teenagers today. Maybe that’s what makes him so special, he captured moods and feelings that are relevant even when the trend dies off.

This was basically the soundtrack to my freshman year of college and subsequent bout of depression. It’s also been proven that the tempo of 67 BPM or so mirrors the beat of the human heart, hence it soothes. And then there’s the emotional crux of the song in that bridge where MJ’s voice shatters to whisper ‘whisper three words’. Three words. ‘I love you’. ‘You’re not alone’. It’s really the same thing.

On one hand MJ is expressing his longing to his lover in ‘Another day has gone’ and wishing he was with her. On the other hand it could be perceived that MJ is here with the listener and that he wants them to know that they are not alone. This applies to so many people: marginalized communities, the mentally ill, etc. Even people that have passed on and MJ’s fans are no exception.

The video for “You’re Not Alone” features MJ lying naked on the floor of a dimly lit room being cradled by angel wings. Critics can say what they will about the video being self-indulgent, but to me it represents radical vulnerability. Here is a Black man at his most sensitive, 180 degrees from traditional masculine posturing. It is incredibly powerful and continues to evince strong feelings of recognition and affection to this day. My queer book club compared this song’s message to the premise of TV shows Pose and how found family resonates with both of those works. Art that makes us feel recognized is never going to grow old.

Musically ‘You’re Not Alone’ is a masterpiece. The track is a fabulous study in the art of building up to a climax in music and MJ’s vocal layers create a sense of an invisible celestial choir backing him up on the word ‘always’. The track is pretty bare in terms of production for a track of this era and that makes the simplicity of the words all the more powerful. I read somewhere that the melody was written by R. Kelly but MJ delivers the track with such fragile sensibility it becomes his own. And interestingly enough, although it’s a song about feeling far away from someone, it makes me feel the opposite, like you can reach out and touch the singer.

In terms of cultural relevance, this song was another powerful release from the ‘HIStory’ era of Michael Jackson’s life, and was a poignant song to release at a time when MJ’s life was publicly falling apart. It is a strange contradiction that the world’s greatest entertainer was able to pen and record a song of such immense comfort to others at a time when he was hurting so very much himself. As a performer I find MJ’s duality of immense inspiration. As for this song, I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve sang this at karaoke on a cold winter’s night – it always sounds SO much better!

Of all the comfort songs Michael has written, “You’re Not Alone” is by far the most intimate and personal. “Heal the World” is a big, global song that is somewhat impersonal in many ways. “You’re Not Alone” is a “bedroom” song – it’s one voice in your ear. The meaning of “You’re Not Alone” is scaled to fit the individual human heart – it’s not about saving the entire planet. In many ways, this song is about personal/psychological salvation as opposed to physical salvation of the planet. And that’s why it connects with so many people on a deeper level – it’s micro not macro. It’s about the feeling of loneliness even when you’re surrounded by multitudes of people. And that’s the focus of the song. A huge pop star making himself small enough to fit into your personal space and deal with your personal struggles.

Note the vocal performance and how he delivers the line 'though you’re far away'. The song isn’t a product, it’s something that he wants to share and the fragility in his delivery is what makes it potent. I think the singer conveys the ‘meaning’ of the song in his delivery. The way he embodies the ‘comforter’ character, the effort that it takes to be a rock for someone another step which is also emotionally taxing but something that he wants to do. The strain in his voice when he sings these lines adds to the sincere ‘subtext’ that these lines could have been just sung and the song could have been just another product but it isn’t.
