I recently finished reading Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone, which is set in Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula in the 1970s. The story takes place at a fictional homestead just outside of the real town of Homer, Alaska. In the book, Vietnam War veterans and 1960s counterculture members frequent the same dirty bars, each one trying to escape their troubles. Alaska is a paradox of beautiful fjords and green meadows versus crippling, potentially deadly frostbite and giant grizzly bears. Rather than just describing Alaska, Hannah immerses her readers in the unforgiving land. Readers will recognize scenes in which moose casually wander through gardens, and the long, dark winter affects the main characters’ minds in unexpected ways. Interestingly, the book mirrors the main character’s father’s slowly unraveling PTSD in being wild and totally unpredictable. The book’s locals are made up of tough, kind-hearted men and women and hardened, suspicious survivalists. The local newspaper is old news by the time it’s read. So, the isolation of the family’s location is magnified by the family’s technological lack of connection. They are informationally starved. So, they are more connected to each other and to the community around them than they would be if they were living in a more informationally connected world. And problems can fester in the dark for a long time – literally and metaphorically.
