The wheat ladder broke into pixels, like an old glitchy game. “June!” Dante pulled her close as they tumbled toward Earth. She clutched the Golden Book. The names were gone. The pages wiped clean. Then, one word appeared. “REBOOT.” They hit the ground—except it wasn’t the park, or the school. They stood in a place that looked like a giant factory. Thousands of Junes lined up, each holding a Golden Book. Thousands of Dantes stood beside them. A warehouse of stories. June staggered to her feet, head spinning. Next to her, another June—identical, but in a nurse’s uniform—turned and whispered, “Which version are you? Did you make it to the Oven, or die in the Pantry?”
