This woman's books are truly amazing. Then, after an hour long reading session, I find my eyes beginning to shut against my will, so I set down the book on the bedside table and shut off the lamp. ~ The next morning...

“And the new project? You hesitated. That means yes.” I swallowed, suddenly shy. “It’s… still forming. I’m outlining it. It’s different from my usual books.” “How different?” GreenLee asked, settling beside me like she was ready for a bedtime story. I took a breath. “It’s set in a small coastal town. A place with secrets. Old magic. A tight‑knit group of friends who get pulled into something bigger than they ever expected.” Kat’s eyes widened. “Oh, I love that already.”

but it’s not a book, no way. But as he eased closer to the counter he couldn’t deny what he saw. The object looked just the right size for a hardcover novel. He squinted, trying to make out the author’s name or the book’s title . . . No. No, his stubborn mind protested, it can’t be. But as he moved closer, his unbelieving eyes discerned an adolescent boy’s gray profile, features shrouded by darkness, and printed across the bottom was: Gavin Patchett.

They never did unless they had something they couldn’t say from a distance. By midday, the frost hadn’t melted. I felt it in the air, a stillness that wasn’t silence but waiting. The book was still on the pedestal, and I hadn’t opened it in days—not because I didn’t want to, but because I feared the next words might demand more than I was ready to give. But when I finally walked to it, the page had already turned. Not by wind. Not by my hand. The new writing was darker this time, the strokes heavier, as though pressed with urgency:

It was so dull and black that I wondered what it was even still doing with Ann. “Should I look at it?” My curiosity got the better of me as I brought the book forward, merely just touching it, I could feel a strange aura flowing through the book. This book is clearly not normal. My curiosity was heightened to the max as I reached to open up the book. “Luna, what do you want? Is pasta okay?” Ann's voice pulled me to my senses as I threw the book back at the shelf. “Luna,” Ann came into the room, her eyes trained on me like a predator.

Clearing her throat, Annabelle said, “I’ll go find a book.” “This one’s good,” Aron offered, pushing the one he’d been reading toward her. She was about to refuse, but his eyes held a rare insistence. Then she suddenly recalled the scene of him smashing auction items outside her house… If she turned him down, would he tear the book in half? Her lips twitched. *Forget it. I’ll just go along—better to get through these thirty minutes in one piece.* So she picked up the book and started reading. To her surprise, it was a suspense novel—and quite a gripping one at that.
