He turned his gaze to her, but my eyes were already on her, silently urging her to speak the truth once and for all. If she did, I might be able to trust her.
"Of course," April replied, her voice soft yet steady, but her words struck me like a cold blade. A pang of disappointment clenched my chest, though I hid it behind a composed mask. "My love, don't be mad," she murmured, wrapping her arm through mine, her touch light and affectionate. It should have comforted me, but instead, it ignited a bitter struggle within me not to pull away.
