There was only silence from the other end of the line. As the rain grew heavier, I heard my voice getting softer. "What do you want me to do for you to forgive my brother and let me go?" Jason finally replied to me. Every word of his felt icy to the bone. "Christine, why don't you just die? Once you die, I'll forgive you!" After hanging up, I wandered around the streets in a daze. The noise all around me seemed to have vanished. All I could hear was Jason's voice saying, "Why don't you just die?" over and over again in my head.

Today, she had gone all out, determined to let Zachary see her at her most beautiful one last time. "It's fine. If they don't show, we'll just sue for divorce." Just then, a car came speeding toward us from afar, screeching to a halt right beside us. It was Lucas and Zachary. They climbed out looking utterly defeated, their movements slow and hesitant, like stray dogs slinking forward, as if walking slowly enough would somehow stop us from divorcing them. But nothing could change now. "Let's go." They remained frozen in place, their heads hanging as they looked at us pitifully.

Ava collapsed, her knees giving out, but the Architect caught her before she hit the ground. Tears streamed down the ancient woman's face. "No," her voice broke, laced with desperate grief. "Not yet." The End watched them silently, patiently. It watched the way one might watch a sunrise, or the turning of a tide, or the slow closing of the final page of a book. Then, the Sleeper spoke. For the first time since its awakening, the oldest being in existence sounded desperate. YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN. The End turned its gaze toward the endless eye and offered a sad, almost kind smile.

“Bye, Dad!” David smiled. “I’ll see you later, buddy.” Vanessa waved politely. “It was nice meeting you.” “You too,” Kamara replied sweetly. I couldn’t even force myself to smile. I watched Vanessa and Leo walk out together. For a brief second I thought the nightmare was finally over. I was wrong. Kamara collected her takeaway bag from the waiter. Instead of leaving, she pulled out the empty chair beside David. “Mind if I join you for a minute?”
