There was nothing resembling a plan in my head. Five hundred dollars. That was my account balance as of this morning. Three freelance invoices outstanding, clients who had been promising payment for weeks, my cracked laptop and a portfolio I had been building toward the company I would own in the future. That was all I had to my name. So where was 300k for dialysis and surgery going to come from? My stomach growled audibly in reply. No where. We have the quarterly audits, the merger disputes, and—" "I want everything," Robbin interrupted. She sat down, her movements fluid and economical. She didn't fidget with her pens. She didn't check her reflection. She opened the first folder and began to read. For Robbin, the "billions" weren't about the jewelry or the cars. They were about the distance they created between her and the world that had tried to kill her. Every zero in her bank account was another brick in the wall of her fortress.

“How do you even pronounce those figures in words?” “I believe nine zeroes signify billion.” Jessica whistles. “Seven hundred and twenty-six billion. What would you even do with that kind of money?” I shrug. “Invest to get more, I guess.” “One man having that much seems diabolical. Are you sure he isn’t a vampire? How did you meet his son again?”

The man was a walking sex god in a CEO’s suit. He raised the book between us like a challenge. “This is the most expensive item in this room.” I stared at him, then at the book, then back at him again. A book? “Wait. This book is—?” “Five hundred million dollars.” My brain stopped working. “Five…..what?!” Surely I misheard him. No, I had to have misheard him. There was no universe where a book cost half a billion dollars. Even Lily Cooper’s work, which was precious and rare, wasn't worth that kind of money.
