He pulled her onto him and pressed his face into her hair, breathing in, and dragging in an unsteady breath.
Beneath her, his heartbeat steadily. His skin smelled metallic, from the blood that coated it, and she could smell the old sweat, the tones sharp and sour. Fear and pain sweat. “Oh Heath,” she mouthed the words as her tears created tidemarks through the dried blood.
“How do you feel?” Talen asked softly, speaking to Heath.
“Just great,” Heath’s voice was rasped. He struggled to clear his throat. “No strength.”
“You tried to turn wearing the cuff,” Talen prompted.
