He watched him read.
He thought: this is the pattern. This is what the infinite series resolves to. Not pi, not an elegant abstraction, but a kitchen in the morning and a person reading and the Atlantic outside being what it always is and the life that assembled itself around one correct decision still assembling, still becoming, the way good things do — slowly, persistently, without announcement, the way a garden grows.
