Valentina held her breath, pulse pounding against her throat, the ledger heavy in her hand. The shadow didn’t move. The shadow loomed just beyond the stall door. A pair of shoes—black leather, scuffed at the toes—angled toward her. Valentina’s breath snagged in her chest. Her fingers tightened on the ledger, her red nails biting into the leather. A soft rattle at the lock. Her pulse thundered. The handle jiggled harder this time, the lock straining against the force. Then— A muffled grunt. A scuffle, quick and low. The sound of air being driven from lungs, the faint scrape of leather on tile.

Dust clung to everything, and the dim lighting made it feel more like a tomb than a library. I found a small table in the corner and set my bag down, then started browsing through the shelves. It didn’t take long to realize that most of the books were about standard small-town fare—local history, genealogy, that sort of thing. But buried between the boring volumes on family trees and tax records, I found something a little more interesting. Legends of Blackthorn Ridge. The book was old, its spine cracked and its pages yellowed with age. The title alone made my pulse quicken with anticipation. I pulled it from the shelf and sat down at the table, flipping it open.

A book sealed by blood, only to be opened by the heir who had both fire and forgiveness. “You must go alone,” the priest said. “Only one may enter the Vault.” Jian stepped forward. “She’s not going without me.” Chaewon touched his hand. “This is mine.” He held her gaze and nodded once. The door hissed open. Inside, the vault pulsed like a heartbeat. And there it was, on a pedestal of scorched stone…a book bound in dark leather, etched with fire-glyphs that moved like liquid under her gaze. As she stepped forward, her hand brushed the surface—and the book opened on its own.

She took the book from Vida’s hand and playfully kept it out of her reach. “Hey!” Vida giggled. “Stop it, Tessa. You’ll get my page messed up.” Tessa would not actually lose Vida’s progress in the book. She still sensibly kept her finger where Vida was reading and turned to take a look at the cover. “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief,” Tessa rolled her eyes. “Ugh, again? How many times have you read this book?” Vida looked up and actually thought about it. Fantasy books have always enthralled her. There is something about these stories that make her fall in love a hundred or maybe even a thousand times.

Evelina pulled a book out of her bag that she borrowed earlier in the school library. BAM!!!
